What is necessary for a proper dissertation? Topic definition is a half the way in writing your dissertation and in the defense of the thesis. Topic formulation procedure. What do you need to know about dissertation writing?
The best you can do is to establish a topic of the dissertation as fast as it's possible. At least, choose your scientific direction.
At that very moment, when you become an official student of postgraduate school, you will have to choose a dissertation topic, its actuality, significance and the research question.
In Russia the topic of your research should first be confirmed on the department meeting, and than - on the Science University Council.
On the first stage your advisor will help you with your research topic and research question.
You can change the topic of your research as many times as you want and in any moment. It is quite convenient in case if in the process of research, your work gets the direction other then the first version of it, or if you change its subject, or even the entire scientific direction. Although you can change your topic as often as you want, you should not do it too often.
We think that the best strategy is to change you topic just once, when your dissertation is almost finished, i.e. in the end of your research.
You should have the final version of your topic before pre - defense. It means that the dissertation council will listen to you on the same topic twice, and the second time you will be ready to answer their questions better.
On the defense of dissertation you have to speak on your topic and not digress. You have to speak confident and loud, also you should give to everybody an opportunity to understand that you are a competent professional. Although you have to speak mainly on your own results, illustrate them with graphs, tables, and models. Experts and advisors will ask you some questions about you topic and your research. You should be ready to answer these questions. Also, you have to speak about your research as about serious, although not great, advance. You have to persuade them that you have done an important thing, but there are a lot of things to be done in future. That is the common practice.
