Bloemfontein is located in central South Africa, and it's accommodation options vary from self-catering right through to luxury star-graded hotels, that offer top-notch services. Bloemfontein is viewed as the economic and cultural centre of the Free State and is located 4,600 ft above sea level. Although it is a beautiful city, aptly nicknamed the "City of Roses", it can be a rather warm place. Over the summer period, it gets incredibly hot - with thunder and rain showers occurring quite often in the afternoons - so if you're planning on staying here, winter would be a better time to visit if high heat fatigues you. Frost is a common occurrence in winter, although snow is very rarely seen.
Bloemfontein is home to many buildings with historical significance, such as the City Hall, the Anglican Cathedral, the Dutch Reformed Twin Tower Church, the Old Presidency, the Rugby Museum and the National Museum - all of which are testaments of Bloemfontein's lively and in-depth past. There are many tours and attractions available, from stargazing to shopping, theatres
to flea markets, architecture to museums and Botanical gardens to the ever popular zoo.
Speaking of zoo's, "Friends of the Bloemfontein Zoo" organise a variety of activities regularly, with hits like the Zoo Snooze - where you can stay overnight in the zoo. The zoo snooze is a perfect opportunity if you are wanting to get your little one(s) interested in animals and conservation, or just want them are enjoy the magic of staying somewhere new and seeing the wildlife. South African accommodation's generally offer visitors a very warm welcome, with gregarious, friendly hosts who will be happy to provide you with more information, about what to see and do on your stay if you'd like a more comprehensive list tailored to your personal interests.
One of the recommended restaurants to visit if you are around the Loch Logan Waterfront area, is Picnic. This unique restaurant uses only fresh produce and everything sold at it is homemade - including the condiments which are available for purchase, along with many other sweet treats. With something to suit every budget and need, this is an ideal place to visit if you want to see original Dutch architecture, botanical beauty, enjoy tempting treats, and have a historical base before exploring the Free State. There is a wide variety of Bloemfontein accommodations, scattered within and around, this stately city.
