eBook Readers make people read more than before. Experts explain – people read at a faster rate on eReaders comparing to paperbacks. Possibly it could be that the reader has the ability to choose their preferable font size.
Students read more since e-books have appeared. "Not because it’s fancy or that books themselves are dull," – says Kathy Parker, a librarian in Seneca (IL) Grade School with 33 years’ experience in this area, to dbReaders.com, – "students and adults have told me they do tend to read at a faster rate on the Kindle. I know I read at a faster pace when reading on the Kindle."
Besides, eReader is now a preferable gift for students. "I did notice the very first year we had our eighth grade students using them, they were asking their parents to get them one as a graduation present. The last couple of years, parents have gotten them for their children as Christmas or birthday gifts," – Kathy Parker continues.
The devices have not only changed daily life of students, but also transformed education methods in general.
As for situation in Seneca GS, with over 800 students, right now at the grade school and middle school, all Kindles are checked out to the teachers for them to use with their students in conjunction with their classroom curriculum. 7th and 8th graders are each assigned their own Kindle to use throughout the school year. According to Mrs. Parker – "at the high school level, we have 8 Kindles that are checkout to students. These students may check them out in conjunction with their Literature class so it’s pretty limited. I’m looking into purchasing more at the high school so that other students may check them out. So basically the students are checking out hardback books 99% of the time with the 1% being the limited group of students checking out the 8 Kindles".
Libraries of other schools often use the Nook and iPad as alternative to the Kindle. Usually librarians are in charge of introduction of ebook readers program such as: ordering eBook Readers, processing them, any bookkeeping information, adding titles to them per teachers & students requests, etc.
"Since the introduction of ebook readers I know my library work has changed because I have taken on more added responsibility," – tells Mrs. Parker and then adds – "also I am in charge of setting up training with teachers on using them with their students, team teaching with staff as they begin to use them with their students, keeping the administration up to date on all progress, and reporting, writing and speaking at various national and local events concerning our Kindle program."
All students in Seneca GS have adhered to the policies they have signed along with their parents, that’s why the school does not have any legal or technical issues arise due to the lending of the digital books, as well as any issues with pirate copying of e-books.
