More people are becoming overweight, even though there are many diets to choose from. The problem certainly isn't a lack of diets, but could it be that most diets aren't very good? People most likely do not stay with a specific diet for enough time to see any results. However, if you can pick a diet that's most suitable for you, there's a better chance you'll be able to stay on it for a while.
No matter what diet you choose, you have to be aware of what you're eating every day. It is definitely easy to lose track of what you've consumed throughout the day and the calories in it all, which includes snacks and drinks, even though it doesn't sound too difficult. This is why creating a food journal is a great idea, a place to jot down everything that you consume, no matter how small it is. You'll probably be surprised by all of the little things that slip in after a couple of weeks. You may believe that you're being true to your diet, but in reality you are not counting every last thing. With a food journal as a tool you can stick to your diet better and see where you're going wrong.
If the science of dieting appeals to you then you might be interested in the Volumetrics Diet. Started by Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor, this diet focuses on the energy density of foods, which has to do with how many calories a food has relative to how filling it is. If a food is high in volume but low in calories then it will help you to lose weight. These are foods such as fruits and vegetables. The opposite of this is high density foods, these will add lots of calories from only a small volume of the food, like sweets or cookies. The Volumetrics Diet uses categories for foods with 4 being most dense foods and 1 being least. You should try to eat as much of the first and second group as you can.
Meal packets are sometimes given to you and are all you need on some diets, which is done to make you stick to it. These can be sent via mail or purchased in stores, and they might contain meal bars, shakes and also low calorie versions of regular meals. Medifast, Slim-Fast and Jenny Craig are a few of the many diets out there that do this. Your preferences will play a big part in deciding whether this kind of diet is right for you. Because counting calories every day is a chore many people like the idea of being told what they must eat. However, there are other people who dislike the idea of having to consume formulas and shakes instead of good old proper food.
Everybody is different, this is why there is no diet that is best for everyone. For one thing, you have to be patient and give the diet a chance to work. Very low calorie diets are mostly seen as unhealthy unless needed so the best way to lose weight is by doing it gradually and this will help you keep it off.
