A software solution which was produced for the National Tuberculosis Control and Chest Diseases that functions under the Sri Lanka Health Ministry was launched at the Medical Research Institute Auditorium on 29th of December 2011. The Director of Tuberculosis Control Movement, Dr. A.K.S.B. de Alwis presided this event and a vast number of people including, Dr. Mrs. Supriya Warusavithana of the World Health Organization, Director General of the Health Department, Dr. Ajith Mendis, Assistant Director, Mr. Sarath Chandrasiri Vithana, the Director of the Information Technology of the Health Department, Dr. S.R.U. Wimalarathna, the Director of IJTS (Java Institute) Dr. Ishanta Siribaddana, the Assistant Director of the Tuberculosis Control Movement, Mr. Sudath Samaraweera participated at this event.

Dr. Sunil de Alwis who made a speech at this event declared that each year above ten thousand people were diagnosed to be suffering from tuberculosis and a great number out of them die after suffering for a long period of time and he further declared that not much attention is given to this illness as compared to the attention given to dengue patients.

The particular software functions through the internet and enables the integration of all information of the 28 Tuberculosis Clinics and 4 laboratories dedicated to control tuberculosis in Sri Lanka. The main feature of this software is the possibility of controlling all information about all tuberculosis patients in Sri Lanka and the systematic administration and monitoring of them through a singular network. The software enables the obtaining of all the information about medical reports and medicines that are issued to the tuberculosis patients by entering the National Identity Card Number. It also has the capability of producing reports about the percentage of the illness that is cured through medicine.

At this event, the Director of the IJTS institute, Dr. Ishantha Siribaddana, who produced the software declared that this is the first time that a national software was created in the Sri Lankan Health Service sector and that it was only possible to create such a complicated software in a short time because of the strong leadership of Dr. Sunil de Alwis and the complete support of the staff.

This software was produced by the Department of web technology Research and Development of IJTS (Java Institute). A special factor about the software is that AJAX technology and Cloud Computer technology which are two of the most powerful technologies in the world were used in the creation of this software. Furthermore, it was possible to save a vast sum of foreign exchange as free and open source software were used to produce the particular software.
