In this down economy, with many Americans facing hardships and the housing market at an all time low, the prospect of relocation can seem like an impossible task. Because of this, homeowners across the nation have been searching for new ideas to help them stay in their current homes longer. As a result, home remodeling efforts and renovation projects are steadily becoming the way to do it. Young couples just starting out, who purchased their homes when the government was offering special incentives (The First Time Home-buyer Credit) are now having families and quickly outgrowing their starter homes. For them, making the most out of the limited space they have (through renovations, home projects, etc) is the most feasible options. Homeowners can eliminate many of their space issues by and potentially increase the value of their homes by utilizing their space more effectively.

Majority of first time home buyers are in their mid to late twenties and purchase split level, three bed two bath homes. These buyers typically relocate into a larger home within five to seven years as they start families and outgrow the space they have. For this home owner, it is important for them to sit down and recognize where their needs are. They might be starting a family and have a room for guests or an office. Perhaps they need a space to use as a play room or an entertainment area. Despite what reasons the homeowner has for needing the extra space, the unfinished basement in a split level home is the ideal space to renovate. For all intents and purposes, this post will outline a family who is remodeling their unfinished basement to use as added entertaining space.

The first step in any home renovation is outlining a plan for the space. A homeowner must decide on a theme that works with their personality and the overall feel from the rest of the home. Most people tend to gravitate towards one particular style over another and generally fall into one of a half dozen styles (transitional, contemporary, traditional, eclectic, old world or modern). Of these, the most popular, trending, style is modern (known for streamlined, clean surfaces, muted colors and asymmetric, polished shapes). When designing entertainment areas, a modern theme is relatively simple to pull off.

Once the first stages of the design steps have been completed, a homeowner must evaluate how to make the space functional and decide what elements are most important for the to incorporate into the room. It is advantageous for a home owner to map out where large pieces of furniture (media center, home theater seating, wet bar, etc) will fit into the flow and general feel of the room. Once the larger pieces are in place, filling the room with accents, games and game room accessories can be relatively enjoyable.

The last stage of the renovation process is having a plan and a deadline for the completion of the project. Whether the homeowner elects to work on the remodeling on their own or hire a contractor, a set deadline will keep the ball rolling. By keeping in mind all of the aforementioned steps, homeowners in this down economy can easily enjoy their spaces for years longer.
