If you have ever wanted to work with celebrities and models and you really enjoy looking fashionable, then becoming a personal stylist may be just for you. A personal stylist is somewhat of an image consultant in that you will give advice to the client to make sure that they are dressed the best they can be. You will give them advice on what to wear, what accessories they should use, and even what colours they should be wearing. You will have to be able to do two things, know what is fashionable and dress your client in what would be appropriate for them to wear.
There are many qualities that a personal stylist should have. The first and possibly most important quality you should have is to be resilient. You will have a lot of competition, and it can sometimes get very competitive and there's lots of criticism. So, you will need to be able to overcome the competition and not give up.
You should also be able to give good fashion advice. So, you should be very knowledgeable about the fashion industry. You will need to choose a wardrobe, accessories, and shoes for your clients. The choices you make will need to help your client look good whatever their size, age and shape. You will need to be able to make good choices for each different body type and personality.
Even though personal styling is somewhat of a natural gift that you either have or do not have, you should still get a formal education. Your client will determine exactly how much they want you to have a formal education. Fashion design schools are often the best choice for you to attend. You can earn either a 2 year Associates Degree or a 4-year Bachelors Degree. These degrees will be in Fashion Design, Merchandising, or Marketing.
The best place for you to get experience is through an internship or as an apprentice. There are also many fashion assistant positions available at department stores or at boutiques. If you begin with one of these jobs, you will get a better understanding of the fashion industry and be able to work your way up. You can also use this job to meet potential new clients for you to have if you decide to do freelance work.
Many successful stylists do freelance work. So, in addition to being talented in the fashion world, you will need to be highly organized. You will most likely be working for yourself, so you will need to be able to keep all aspects of the job straight.
There are many qualities that will make you successful in this field. You need to have great interpersonal skills meaning you should be able to deal well with other people even when they are unhappy or stressed. You should also be able to deal with everyone, no matter what their race, sex, age, or even status is. You should also have a very good sense of style, and be able to keep up with the latest in the fashion world. Above all, you need to be able to do the job well by putting together impressive wardrobes for your clients.
