Uterine fibroids are amongst the most common tumors found in women. As per the American college of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, such tumor occurs in 25 to 50% of females. Uterine fibroids are typically non-cancerous; however, it is very important to know more about Fibroids in Uterus so that correct fibroids treatment can be resorted to, well on time. However, it must also be known that these tumors are not related to cancer.
What are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are tumors generally known as uterine leimyomata or myoma. It is associated with the growth inside uterus consisting of smooth fibrous connective tissues and muscle cells found within the walls. A few tumors grow beneath the uterus lining while others may grow between the uterus muscles or towards the external part of the uterus. These tumors may grow as a single unit or in clusters and vary in size.

However, many medical experts point out that Fibroids in Uterus may occur due to environmental, genetic or hormonal factors or combination of all of them. It has been shown by researchers that the Fibroids on Uterus is found in women at childbearing age. To be more specific, women of 30-40 years of age may get this tumor. However, there are some cases of women below 30 years of age having this tumor in uterus. The women, who have given birth previously, have lesser chances of getting uterine fibroids. Additionally, overweight women as well as young African women are more prone to get this tumor. The experts are unable to point out the exact cause behind these facts.
The Symptoms
In most of the cases, there are no any significant symptoms experienced by women having Fibroids in Uterus. However, many women may experience pain and heavy bleeding during menstrual periods if they have benign tumors. It has also been noticed that females also get bleeding between two menstrual periods. One of the major symptoms is that a woman feels pressure in the lower part of the abdomen and urinates very often. This happens because of the pressure of these tumors to the bladder.
The symptoms may vary from woman to woman. Some also report the pain during intercourse and in their lower back. Infertility, miscarriage and difficulties in getting pregnant are some of the common symptoms of uterine fibroids. It is highly recommended to contact a gynecologist if a woman feels any of these symptoms and signs so that it can be treated on time.
Detection of Fibroids
The Fibroids on Uterus are detected by a thorough examination of pelvic part of women. A gynecologist examines ovaries, vagina and uterus. If the doctor feels the requirements to do imaging tests, he/she would ask you to get an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), ultrasound, CT scan and x-rays done from reputed laboratories. These tests can confirm the presence of Fibroids in Uterus.
Treatment
Most of the times, there is no need to get the Fibroids treatment to get rid of these tumors, however, sometimes the symptoms can get worse in a woman. In such cases, they prefer to get the fibroids treatment for this tumor. The main fibroids treatment is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). In this procedure, the supply of the blood to the tumor is blocked. The tumor shrinks inside the uterus causing relief from the symptoms. However, it is extremely recommended to get the fibroids treatment from a qualified and experienced gynecologist. After the treatment, woman must adhere to the suggestions of the doctor.
