EMR (electronic medical records) is a digitized version of patient medical records. The age old system of manual patient records management carries a number of disadvantages. At first, it’s highly time consuming, each and every detail needs to be entered manually including the codes. There is lot of repetition of work resulting into huge wastage of time. Due to time constraints not every patient medical detail can be entered, which serves as a hurdle in the path of effective diagnosis and treatment. Often the manual system runs into a number of discrepancies, many times which results into poor diagnosis, medical negligence and treatment failure. EMR (electronic medical records) seem to be the answer to the ever growing difficulties of the manual system of patient records management.
The new age technology solutions like EMR (electronic medical records) ensure to make life easier for doctors, hospitals as well as patients. The system can help to streamline the overall backend process of doctor’s clinic. The time can be saved to a great extent with the help of readily available data input forms and medical service codes. The patient information can be entered with much greater detail and accuracy. The system also provides with greater degree of flexibility as regards accessing the patient information. The information can be accessed at any point of time irrespective of the location. It aids in the overall process of diagnosis and treatment. Increase in productivity, improved ROI (return on investment) and better quality of patient service are the benefits that can be derived from the newer technology if a right application is chosen and implemented for the practice.
Yes, it is believed that EMR selection is of utmost importance, it is the first step in the successful implementation of the system for the practice. Utmost care needs to be taken when selecting a system for the practice – it starts with analyzing the current manual system in operation and preparing a checklist of features required for the practice. Truly speaking, there are numerous vendors offering a wide range of systems, however, not all systems are alike they differ in functionalities. Hence, not all systems available in the market may be suitable for the practice.
Once the features are shortlisted, the cost factor of EMR comes into picture. The licensing fee, implementation and other costs differ from vendor to vendor. Hence, a careful evaluation and market study is must before finalizing a system for the practice. Then comes implementation and training, the vendor must provide with the implementation of the software as smooth transition plays a very important role. It takes time for the staff to get acquainted with the system features and functionalities, hence, proper training must be provided by the vendor to the clinic staff so that an effective utilization of the system can be achieved.
Customer support plays a very important role when switching over to a newer system like EMR (electronic medical records). At times, the staff may get stuck up with a particular feature or functionality and would need support to come out of it. There are times when the system needs to be integrated with other automated systems, which would require technical support during the process of implementation. Long term customer support is of utmost importance in the smooth functioning of the system and hence, utmost care needs to be taken when selecting a particular vendor.
Implementation of an EMR (electronic medical records) system could be of great help and support to doctors, hospitals, patients and in fact the entire healthcare system, provided a right system is selected for the practice. A system may or may not be too advanced or too fancy; however, it must be equipped with the necessary features required by the practice.
