Detoxification is the process where the body is rejuvenated by flushing out toxins acquired through our foods and life habits. It's normally a constant bodily process but at times the continuous build up of toxic substances in your system may reach a level where they might create an imbalance unless washed out. Your body's system may have been blocked by contaminants and pollutants it had been exposed to, and those ingested from the processed food thus rendering it incapable of effectively cleansing itself of these toxins. This taxes your body organs responsible for excreting waste products thereby increasing the risk of cancer attacks. Such poisoning also causes tiredness, muscle pains, skin ailments, indigestion and odor breath. These symptoms should be an indication enough that your vital body organs functioning may not be at optimum level, and hence it would be most appropriate you undertake a detox diet to help restore your system balance, improve your health and increase your body energy levels.

A detox diet cleanses by removing poisons and toxins from the body. This diet involves eating of pure and natural foods that aid the functioning of the kidneys, lymph, and liver. Specific diets vary, but most are preceded by fasting for some period of time after which you are required to follow a strict diet of fruit and fruit juices, raw vegetables and water. Some of the detox diets also advocate the use of herbs and specific supplements plus colon cleansing to empty ones intestines.

The benefits from such diets come from avoiding eating of highly processed foods containing solid fats and refined sugar or food contaminated by certain ingredients not very necessary for human life, like flavor enhancers, coloring, and various artificial preservatives. Since detox diets involve consuming limited foods or elimination of certain foods from the diet, it will cause your body to burn its accumulated stored fats, during which the fat-stored "toxins" are released into the blood, and then eliminated through the skin, urine, blood, feces and breath. Some people have also reported feeling more energetic and focused during and after these diets.

During detox you should avoid using drugs, smoking tobacco, and cut back on alcohol and coffee. Avoiding or reducing stress is also important because these diets are holistic and natural in their approach, therefore any changes in your lifestyle can quite alter the objectives of a detox diet-cleansing and rejuvenating. However, for a better health one should adopt the practices of healthy living such as eating a balanced diet based on lean protein sources, fruits and vegetables and whole grains, and nuts, regular physical activity or body exercise and approaching life with a positive attitude.

Before going on detox, you always should consult your physician, especially if you are anemic, diabetic, or an expectant or lactating woman. He will analyze the possible side effects and advice you accordingly on which diet or safer alternative to go for. Some of the popular detox diets include: The Lemon detox diet, The Martha's Vineyard diet detox, The Fruit Flush diet, Colon detox diet, and The Raw Food detox diet.
