Summary: When it comes to bicycles, there are so many varieties to choose from, not forgetting the accessories, that shopping for one can be quite daunting. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right one for you, and make the experience just a little bit easier.
Cycling is not only a great mode of transport, but it’s also fun and helps you to keep fit. There are different forms of cycling, and different specialist bicycles that are made for each style, some of which may encompass more than one style. Depending on the form of cycling you choose, make sure you choose the right equipment. The bicycle should tick all the boxes when it comes to needs and fitness.
In addition, most people are put off from investing in good equipment because of what they assume is an exorbitant bicycle price; in sri lanka, depending of the type of bicycle, prices can vary from affordable to extremely expensive. However, if you plan on using your bicycle on a regular basis, it is definitely worth spending a little extra to get a durable bike to ensure you don’t spend unnecessarily on maintenance after.
First things first. When trying to decide on a particular bicycle, ask yourself these questions:
Are you cycling by yourself or with a group?
If with a group, what do they ride?
What terrain will you be cycling on?
What would you like to achieve with your new bicycle?
If your intention is to cycle with a group, buy a bike similar to what they ride. You won’t be able to keep up with them if you are riding a mountain bike on paved road, nor can you attempt to ride a road bike on rough terrain.
Recreational Bikes
Recreational riding can refer to riding your bike around the park or using it as exercise equipment for fitness purposes. This type of use is typically infrequent, done in short bursts and is generally over flat terrain. Any kind of bicycle can be used for this, including older models with next to no gears. Road bikes used for recreational purposes generally have good frames, slim tyres and flat or drop handles. They are lightweight and designed for speed, but not as sturdy as a mountain bike. They can’t be used off road and are only meant to be used on paved surfaces. These are the bikes you want if you plan on cycling in the park, or to and from work.
Touring Bikes
Touring bikes are made for long distance riding, which can include cycling over a great distance to work, or cycling tours that can last from a day to months. These bikes are designed to be ridden on paved roads, but are durable enough for distance riding. Touring bikes are designed with mounting bolts for baggage racks and fenders, and while they do have drop handles, they generally have a relaxed frame so the cyclist is more upright and comfortable. In addition, they have a lower gear range when compared to a road bike, this allows heavy loads to be carried up steep climbs. Touring bikes are commonly used by couriers services because of their ability to transport heavy loads.
Off Road / Mountain Bikes
These bikes can be used on all types of unpaved surfaces. This includes taking short cuts over lawns, riding over farmland or depending on where you live, off road riding to office. Generally, off road cyclists prefer riding in the wild and enjoy the challenges it provides. These durable bikes have flat or upright handlebars, low gear range and shock absorbers or suspension. There are various forms of mountain bikes, so its best to ask your seller which would be appropriate for you depending on how you plan to use it.

Bicycle motocross (BMX) bikes are made for dirt racing, road riding and performing tricks on ramps. They are not suitable for commuting as the low seating makes riding over long distances very uncomfortable.
