Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems.

It is considered one of the oldest and broadest of among all engineering disciplines. In mechanical engineering, we often come across the terms ‘CNC machining and aluminium die casting.

These terms in fact, have a close relationship with many products we see in our daily lives.

CNC Machines

CNC Machining is a manufacturing process that involves the use of computers to control machine tools. Tools that can be controlled through this manner include the likes of lathes, mills, routers and grinders. The term CNC (as in ‘CNC Machine’) stands for ‘Computer Numerical Control’.

On the surface, it might look to you like a normal PC controlling the machines, but it’s more than that. In fact, it involves the use of sophisticated computer software and control consoles to complete the difficulty tasks in an effective manner.

An example of a high-tech factory heavily involved in this manufacturing process is the Engtek Group based in Penang, Malaysia.

Die Casting

To create an accurately dimensioned, sharply defined, smooth or textured surface metal parts, the engineering industry adopts the manufacturing process called ‘die casting’.

In this manufacturing process, molten metal is forced into reusable metal dies in a high pressure environment to create the finished products. Experts described this process as the shortest way that separates between raw materials and finished products.

In addition, the term "die casting" is also commonly used to refer to the finished part.

Pressure Die Casting

Pressure die casting is considered one of the most cost-effective, fast and reliable processes in manufacturing for high volume production. This process consists of injecting a molten metal alloy into a steel mold, or a tool in a high pressure environment.

The amazing fact of this manufacturing process is that the finished part will get solidified immediately (from milliseconds to few seconds) to form a net-shaped component that is required.

CNC Machining and Die Casting are two of the most important parts in mechanical engineering and each of them play an important role in the manufacturing industry. The process involves producing a huge number of both large and small objects that we will use in daily life.

It’s not exaggerating to say that if an object contains parts, it is sure produced under the process of precision machining.
