An industrial style kitchen has become a fantastic trend in recent years. This has been supported by the appliance industry, with manufacturers releasing "pro" appliances with the features and appearance that you would expect in commercial kitchens. However, many homeowners remain a little confused about industrial kitchen design ideas. So, here we will explore the key elements.
Seeing the Inner Workings
While you would normally conceal elements in your kitchen, an industrial kitchen design tends to show the inner workings of the room. This means that you can leave ducting for your range hood and air con, light fittings, and piping on display. If you don’t want to go the whole way to an industrial style design, you could opt for open shelving, cutlery rails on your splashbacks and bowser style mixer taps.
Reused and Repurposed
Another great element of an industrial kitchen design is reusing and repurposing old items. You can use recycled timber, antiques and even reclaimed furniture to add some character and authenticity to your plan. This is a great way to add some real personality to your design, using baskets for storage, glass jars for cutlery and other repurposed items for a unique look. So, be sure to keep an eye on any garage sales or antique fairs in your area for some inspiring accessories.
Aged Surfaces
Rustic, wide wood floorboards and concrete are an excellent flooring choice for an industrial style kitchen as they are the type of practical surface used in a factory or warehouse. You can polish old concrete to create a more attractive look, but remember that concrete can be hard and cold on your feet. If you prefer a warmer feel, you could opt for a floating floor that looks distressed and adds texture to your aesthetic.
If you are fully renovating, you may want to consider leaving some brickwork exposed. You can paint over your brickwork or coat with a clear varnish to seal in any dust, but allow a rustic brick texture.
Pendant Lighting
Finally, you need to consider your lighting. An industrial style kitchen is usually characterised by pendant lighting. If you have a larger room with a high ceiling, you can use heavy industrial lighting, but you can use more discrete pendants in smaller spaces. Don’t forget that you can also add more panache with wood, glass, chrome, copper or steel fixtures. If your room is not naturally bright, you can supplement your lighting pendants with discreet spots or under cabinet lighting.
