Harbour Island in the Bahamas is known for its stunning vistas, contrasting pink sand beaches and turquoise waters complemented by colonial homes in pastel colours of times gone by. A tiny space of land, just under 5km long and not even 1km wide, the former British capital of the Bahamas used to be a hideaway for the few lucky ones who knew about the island. Inspiring architect Chad Oppenheim is one of those lucky few and has used the picturesque shore to build his own getaway.
Optimising the views of the coast, the sky and the surrounding jungle, the interior has been kept minimal with designer indoor furniture focusing on natural materials and simple luxury.
The entrance to the home is almost ceremonial in nature. Surrounded by jungle on all sides, the tropical green pathway opens out onto a grand staircase reminiscent of ancient temples. The first glimpses of the interior give the impression it indefinitely extends in all directions with folding glass walls opening out onto views of the ocean, the jungle and even the sky.
The result is a sensual and sensitive experience, reduced to its essence through the use of elemental forms and sincere materiality and detailing - Chad Oppenheim
Oppenheim’s vision was to maintain a solid connection to the tropical landscape while introducing a contemporary and modern approach to the interior. Focusing on environmentally sensitive design, the materials used throughout were chosen consciously as was the whole build, making sure the foot print was absolutely minimal.
The colour palette is consistent with the natural surrounds and heritage architecture of the island in tones of crisp white and warm cedar and adds an incredible freshness to the whole property. In keeping with his minimalist approach, Oppenheim has placed luxury home furniture sparsely throughout; there is no hint of clutter in this home.
The designer indoor furniture is intentionally placed, with purpose. A teak bathtub in an otherwise empty bathroom and two rocking chairs on a huge back porch are the perfect examples of paired back styling. With such an exquisitely built home and tropical views as far as you can see, there’s really not much more you’d need.
