If you were responsible for adding the conservatory to your house, then you will know how much effort and expense there is in the quintessential British conservatory. There is the time and expense of planning, and then the parts and labour costs of erecting it. A big investment for sure.

And if you bought a house that already had a conservatory, chances are you paid more for the house than you would have done had it not had a conservatory, right? After all, an extra room equals more value.

If you are not using your conservatory as much as the rest of your house, or not using it all year round, then you are not getting value for money. You might want to use your conservatory as an extra lounge, or a home office – but you find that it is simply too cold in winter, and too hot in summer.

Money straight through the roof

With glass or polycarbonate roofs you will find that your conservatory can be akin to an igloo in the winter, and though you can heat a conservatory you will find yourself using at least 13% more energy than other households if you do. In fact, according to a Survey carried out by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the average conservatory owner uses an extra 4,800 kWh per annum. Which at 15.5p pkw equates to £744 per year! That’s money straight through the roof.

Not only does insulating your conservatory keep your conservatory warmer in the winter, but also helps keep it cooler in the summer months.

Stops damage from harmful UV rays

And speaking of the summer months - the contents of your conservatory are exposed to UV rays, meaning that your furnishing can fade as the UV attacks and damages causing visual and physical problems, such as:

  • Fading colour

  • Becoming weaker

  • Becoming brittle

  • Becoming chalky

  • Cracking

  • Disintegration

There are light absorbing colour bodies called chromophores that are present in dyes. These can begin to fade under constant exposure to UV rays, what we call sun-bleaching. From fading of your furnishings, to your wooden items becoming weakened, you may find that you need to replace items sooner than you would expect.

A cost-effective solution to a solid-tiled replacement roof

You could choose to have a new roof fitted to your conservatory, but this can be a very costly option. Conservatory roof insulation, fitted entirely from the inside with no need to replace the existing roof, can be fitted at a fraction of the cost.

Not only will it give you a room you can help keep your energy bills down, with a more functional and energy efficient room, insulation will add value to your house.

Sagars 365 conservatory roof insulation system

Using the 365 insulation system, Sagars, a family-based Yorkshire company, have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into that can be used for any purpose, all year round.

The insulation we use is a 6 Layer, 15mm Multifoil Insulation material - equivalent to approximately 100mm Mineral Wool or 50mm Rigid PIR Insulation. The system was inspired by NASA, who use multi-foil insulation to protect the equipment and crew of their spacecraft from the extreme conditions of space travel.

U-value of a polycarbonate conservatory roof - 3.08 W/m²K

U-value with Sagars 365 insulation added - 0.46 W/m²K

A U-Value is the calculation of heat lost through any given surface. The lower the U-Value, the less heat it allows to pass through.
