Introduction
The first technology to change our work is not artificial intelligence. Steam engine, electrical power, telephones, railways, cars and aircraft are only a few of the technological developments that have had significant effects throughout the course of history on life and work. In all instances, a technical medium has been supplanted by human labour, which could do the job faster and better.
In each instance, existing employment were terminated simultaneously with the creation of new positions. Humans have to change their behaviour and developed new skills, thereby enabling them to better utilize and enhance their lives. Those who lived in the mid-19th century could not understand that we were living in a world studded with millions of kilometres of asphalt roads and fast-moving cars. When they were launched in the 1960s, the first automated counters (ATMs) were greeted with suspicion. ATMs are currently present worldwide in millions of places. There were no social media sites like Facebook and Twitter 20 years ago but in recent years, they have emerged as key components in the global socioeconomic puzzle.
How is artificial intelligence different?
Artificial intelligence differentiates itself by the speed with which it changes. Artificial intelligence is not a product but rather an advance technology which helps to execute and automate a wide range of tasks.
It is inevitable that artificial intelligence will change the employment environment significantly, even in areas previously considered off limits for technological progress and automation. Artificial intelligence will profoundly alter the economy and produces many new jobs, while making some current ones obsolete or less human intelligence dependent.
In many domains, learning algorithms are superior than humans, especially when there are sufficient data that allows for the formation of profound neural networks that accurately classify and forecast. Computer technological advances have made it possible to search for huge volumes of data with the help of artificial intelligence algorithms and find significant models within a fraction of the time it took humans to do the same.
Although artificial intelligence will probably never fully replace people on the job, it will complement people by enhancing speed and precision in regular tasks. As a consequence, the growing demand for human knowledge in a number of sectors may significantly increase. There's an important skill gap, for example, in the area of cybersecurity, since more and more security experts are required on the market to safeguard our increasingly digital society. However, it may be feasible to reduce the requirement for human experts in certain areas where supply presently exceeds the need. For example, with the proper deep learning methods, a radiologist may double or triple the number of radiation pictures she looks at on a daily basis and substantially increase its productivity.
Every digital innovation has the potential to be immediately duplicated across the globe, and this is fundamental to a very significant AI problem. The software-only approach eliminates the need for costly manufacturing processes. Additionally, as cloud computing and Internet connection become more prevalent, they become more accessible to the general population. As a result, advances in artificial intelligence will occur at a far quicker rate than previous technological revolutions.
Relevance in the era of artificial intelligence?
To be relevant in this new economic reality, education must undergo a fundamental reorganization. A plan for developing a system of lifelong learning that would allow future generations to pursue a diverse variety of professional employment throughout their lives.
Artificial intelligence-induced developments will need institutions and students to reconsider their approach to education. One of the primary goals of humans is to discover how they may be differentiated from robots. The reality is that machines continue to improve their abilities via labour. As a result, many people see that training must become a lifetime endeavour, requiring them to constantly enhance their abilities and retrain in order to remain one step ahead of the robots.
In the next 3 decades, many of the jobs today will cease to exist. This means that schools must reinvent themselves to prepare students for this new change with a new educational paradigm.
The biggest shift is a move towards education which promotes creativity, the only arena in which people will flourish. AI systems detect patterns of data and provide predictions based on this knowledge extremely well. However, people remain in the upper hand of computers when it comes to abstract thinking, common sense and transfer learning.
It takes thousands of hours for deep learning algorithms to reach beginning skill, whereas humans may learn to play a new computer game within a few of hours. At the same time, people are capable of using abstract concepts gained from one region to another, whereas for AI, each new task is a completely new issue that has to be learned from the start.
Artificial Intelligence's Implications on Future Education
Traditional teaching methods haven't always taken into consideration the unique experiences that students have that impact their learning. The most successful learning environment is one that incorporates a variety of teaching methods while also promoting individuality. Unfortunately, most teachers are unable to accommodate each student's unique learning style.
In situations when there are a limited number of teachers, artificial intelligence may be used as a tool. Machine learning apps employ algorithms that learn from the data they gather to evaluate information more quickly and in larger quantities than humans. These algorithms may then provide suggestions to the teacher, such as identifying areas in which their students have historically struggled or excelled so that courses may be tailored to their needs.
Administrative responsibilities encumber the majority of teachers, limiting the amount of time they have to spend one-on-one with their students. These tasks can be assisted by AI, which can do them at a far quicker pace than a teacher. According to a research conducted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), about 60,000 schools in China have used an essay-grading machine that is over 90% accurate.
If this level of achievement can be achieved across the board, it's conceivable that teachers' responsibilities may shift. The more mundane tasks they can eliminate from their everyday routines; the more time they will have to spend with their students. Allowing educators to focus only on teaching will provide all participants with a more meaningful experience.
For teachers who wish to create dynamic learning environments may find analytics and Artificial Intelligence to be very helpful. Data from students are fed into algorithms that identify learning patterns in a range of settings. It is difficult for a teacher to communicate the route that a student should take to improve their learning until the student's learning problem has been identified. It is feasible to use the power of data and analytics to make decisions that benefit kids and assist them in overcoming some of their learning difficulties. Machine learning models may help us detect and solve problems on a big scale, as well as take preventative measures.
An AI system with a vast quantity of data may be able to provide a more personalized learning experience. For instance, if a student in literature is having trouble with a specific topic, an artificial intelligence engine may recommend materials that past literature students have found helpful. It may also recommend courses that other literature students have taken and found useful. Kids may be able to exercise greater freedom if they study at their own pace and participate actively in what they learn.
Universities are embracing distance learning, and many will do so when campuses reopen from the COVID locked down, opening the path for a blended learning experience that incorporates both in-person and online components. Learning platforms may be accessed from any device with an internet connection, from any place, and at any time, allowing more students to get access to the materials they need. As a result, even if they don't have access to a real classroom or resources like textbooks, they may still benefit from online learning possibilities. Furthermore, it allows students in other time zones to access the same material as their peers and study alongside them.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, AI offers access to suitable learning opportunities for disadvantaged individuals and communities, persons with impairments, refugees, those who have dropped out of school, and those who live in remote areas (UNESCO). Even low-resource communities may benefit from artificial intelligence by charting a student's trajectory, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and introducing them to topics that would be otherwise difficult to understand without assistance.
Despite the fact that the future of education is unclear, we can be confident that artificial intelligence will continue to change our educational institutions. It has the potential to improve teachers' abilities while also allowing pupils to explore their ideas. The capacity of robots to collaborate with humans may help to bridge gaps in our educational institutions, enabling students all around the world to benefit from the best possible education.
