Cleaning your refrigerator condenser coils may seem like a daunting task, but it's not as difficult as you might think. The process is quite simple and doesn't take very long at all. Cleaning your refrigerator condenser coils is a simple way to ensure that your appliance runs efficiently. A clean coil will produce less heat, which means it doesn't have to work as hard helping you save on energy bills! Let us show you how to clean them with our easy step-by-step guide.
Dirty Refrigerator Condenser Coils
What are condenser coils and what do they do
Refrigerator condenser coils are the key to a well-cooled refrigerator. These groups of metal plates and wires work by emitting cold air that sinks into your food storage area, reducing its temperature at just the right time so you don't have any unpalatable leftovers or beverages!
Why should you clean them
Cleaning refrigerator condenser coils is one of the most important steps to prolonging the life of your refrigerator. A clogged coil can cause an increase in energy usage and a decrease in performance, which will result in higher utility bills and a shorter lifespan for your fridge. The good news is that cleaning these coils is not difficult; you just need some time, patience, and a few tools.

How to clean your condenser coils
Please use caution when cleaning these surfaces as it is very easy for small objects to fall into the grates or between them. Always be mindful of any type of debris before touching or moving anything else around in the area. Please make sure all children and pets stay clear of whatever appliance you are working with during these procedures. As they may become injured if they come in contact with anything sharp or jagged.
It is also a good idea to clean behind your refrigerator before you begin working near the coils so that there is not a big mess to clean up when you are done.
- Unplug your refrigerator
Unplug or remove power from your refrigerator. If you have been using it, allow it time to cool down- then unplug it from its electrical source. Also, check behind your refrigerator for any coolant lines and make sure they are not damaged in any way before cleaning around them!
- Locate the condenser coils
Find the condenser coils which will be located either at the bottom, back, side, or front of your fridge depending on where yours happens to be situated inside. Usually, they will be found in or on the back of your fridge.
- Get access to your coils
Remove any grill or door near where you need to access your coils. For most fridges, this is usually held in place with a screw or two and can be taken off rather easily with a screwdriver. Then set it aside and out of the way so it doesn't get dirty or damaged
- Vacuum clean the condenser coils
Using a vacuum cleaner- carefully remove loose dust, dirt, debris, and cobwebs that may be stuck to your coils by gently sucking them up into your vacuum cleaner nozzle (or attachment). Be sure to vacuum the entire surface of the coils. Don't worry about trying to get too close to hard-to-reach areas as this will come with time and practice.
- Clean around your refrigerator
Cleaning behind your refrigerator: If you have been meaning to clean behind it for a while- make sure you do so before performing these procedures. Your fridge has quite a few moving parts in it that can be costly if they malfunction! Make sure anything hanging off of the back isn't obstructing any of the coolant lines behind your fridge either. They are usually held on by clips or plastic tabs and can easily break off if pulled too hard when removing them from their mounts.
- Wipe down your condenser coils
If you are using any chemical cleaning solutions - make sure they are safe to use near refrigerant lines before applying them to anything! This can be especially dangerous if misused around coolant lines or other parts of your fridge's compressor! Please read all safety considerations before deciding on which cleaner you would like to use.
- Put everything back in place after finishing
Once you are finished cleaning- slowly release the clips holding everything in place and replace them as best as you can by hand. After that, it is a good idea to check behind your refrigerator again for anything obstructing coolant lines that may be under or around where you left the grill/door previously. If something is obscuring them - move it aside with care then reattach power to the refrigerator according to its instruction manual before using it again.
