Massage is one of those things that you either like, or you don't. I, for one, find that massage is therapeutic and relaxing. Unless it's a deep tissue massage. Still therapeutic, but the relaxing part, for me, comes AFTER the massage. It's not for the faint of heart. I was amazed that the therapist was able to take a description of my issues and know exactly where to target and how much pressure to use.

What is it?

Deep tissue massage is the process of using slow intense pressure in the deep muscle tissue of the body releasing tension and muscle knots. Muscle knots are pea-sized bunches of muscle tissue that have been bound up for a while. It's the therapist's job to break up these knots and release them with the use of their hands, forearms, and even elbows to put the right amount of pressure on the exact area they are targeting.

What does it do?

This type of massage breaks up scar tissue due to injuries. It is also very beneficial for stiff and tense muscles due to arthritis, plantar fasciitis, pregnancy, and childbirth, and it even lowers blood pressure. Deep tissue massage assists with blood circulation and helps the lymphatic system operate more efficiently to detoxify the body. Along with a good detox, this type of massage also assists in releasing serotonin which reduces anxiety and will help you fall asleep more quickly.

Are there any side effects?

When we have any type of procedure done, whether it's dental, cosmetic, chiropractic, or therapeutic, there will most likely be some form of side effect. The same is true with deep tissue massage. Due to the increased circulatory and lymphatic movement, detoxification is bound to happen. There will also be some soreness due to the intensity of the treatment.

Drinking a lot of water is a must so that your body can process the toxins out of your system. It is also recommended that you eat nutritious meals, get plenty of rest and use a heating pad or icepack if needed.

Deep tissue massages are wonderful for your body and mind, and I recommend trying one. It may not be for everyone, but you won't know if you don't try! If you are concerned or nervous about the treatment, do some research and check reviews of your local centers and give them a call. Ask for a consultation to alleviate any misconceptions and clear up any questions you may have, concerning the treatment of your specific condition or intent.
