So, I just got back from a solo trip to Belgrade, Serbia, and let me tell you, it was incredible. Like, “pinch me, I must be dreaming” incredible. But before we get into all the amazing things I saw, ate, and experienced (spoiler alert: it’s a lot), let’s talk about my highlight, the people. Belgrade is overflowing with the friendliest, most welcoming locals I’ve ever encountered on my solo travels.

Now, I’m a seasoned traveller, but I’ll admit, venturing to a new city alone can be a bit nerve-wracking. But Belgrade? Not a moment of unease. In fact, people were so friendly and helpful I felt more safe than I do back at home.

Speaking of helpful, let’s talk about my transfer guy, Dragan from all you need is Belgrade transfers. This legend not only pointed out cool landmarks on our ride, but he made sure I got in to my apartment safely as it was a little hard to find at first. Once I’d arrived at the Dominic Smart & Luxury Suites Terazije, I couldn’t be happier. Let me just say, luxury is an understatement. This place was massive, with 2 balconies overlooking the city, a bathroom that felt like a spa, and a shower with enough space to do cartwheels (which I may or may not have done – don’t judge). Plus, the receptionist, Dragana was an absolute gem, helping me with everything from late check-in details to recommendations.

Alright, enough with the logistics (although, comfy bed and a safe environment are pretty important, am I right?). Let’s get to the good stuff: exploring Belgrade!

Day 2: Belgrade Fortress, Unexpected Kindness, and Phone-Free Adventures

My second day started off perfectly. Sunny skies, beautiful city views over Belgrade, tripod all set up to capture some amazing vlogging footage for my YouTube channel. And then… disaster struck. A rogue gust of wind sent my new iPhone 15 Pro plummeting from the 4 story balcony. Let’s just say, gravity won that round.

Here’s where the Belgrade kindness comes in. A kind stranger not only retrieved the phone (RIP), but also tried to help me find a repair shop. I ended up at 'Doktor Mobil servis mobilnih telefona', these tech wizards fixed my phone in just three hours, and at a great price!

While my phone was getting its surgery, I explored the Temple of Saint Sava, an architectural masterpiece that left me speechless. Pro tip: don’t miss the beautiful paintings inside – they’re incredible.

Next stop: The Nikola Tesla Museum. Come on, how can you visit Belgrade and not pay homage to the genius behind the electricity that keeps our phones charged and our fridges humming? The little light-up experiment (you hold a stick, it lights up with no wires – mind blown!) was pretty cool, and getting to see his final resting place was humbling.

Exhausted but happy, I grabbed some Cevapi (Belgrade’s famous sausage) at Gradska Pivnica Terazije. Served in a pitta with onions and a side of pure deliciousness, it was the perfect way to end day one.

Day 3: Burek, Botanical Beauty, and a Touch of History

Day three was all about soaking up the city’s vibes. First stop: Feniks Gelato Saloon for a delicious breakfast – a warm ham and cheese croissant and a fresh orange juice. Fuelled up, I headed to Belgrade Fortress, a sprawling historic site that’s practically a city within a city.

Here’s where things get interesting. While trying to take a photo leaning my phone up against a rock (because clearly I haven’t learnt from yesterday’s palava) a friendly local named Miroslav offered to help. Not only did he take my picture in a much better spot, but he also ended up giving me a personal tour of the fortress, Kalemegdan and Ružica Church explaining their history and even showing me some hidden gems. Seriously, Miroslav, you’re a legend!

Feeling a bit peckish after my history lesson, I wandered into Rajićeva Shopping Center and, well, ended up at McDonald’s. I know what you’re thinking, visiting Serbia and eating Maccies! I saw ham and cheese toasties on the menu and I just couldn’t resist – and trust me it hit the spot.

More exploring with a stop at the beautiful St. Mark’s Orthodox Church and a return visit to the Temple of Saint Sava (because, well, it’s THAT stunning). Dinner was a delicious and affordable Chinese takeaway feast from Super Vok. Day 3 was calling, and I was ready to conquer it.

Day 4: Farewells, Souvenirs, and Stunning Vistas

My last day in Belgrade arrived way too soon. My first mission was to find some delicious Burek, a flaky pastry filled with savoury goodness. Local bakeries are a dime a dozen in Belgrade, and every single one I saw was filled with locals. My Burek was everything I dreamed of – crispy, golden, and bursting with flavour. I devoured it in Republic Square, serenaded by a group singing traditional Serbian songs. Perfect fuel for a day of exploration!

Feeling sentimental (and slightly stuffed), I wandered down to Knez Mihailova, Belgrade’s main pedestrian street. This is the place to go for souvenirs, I snagged a few trinkets to remember my trip by.

Since I had a few hours to spare before checking out, I decided to head to the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”. Let me tell you, this place was a haven of peace and tranquillity. Thousands of flowers, trees, and greenery stretched out, offering a welcome escape from the city bustle. There, I met a lovely local and his aunt who not only explained the meanings behind some of the flowers but also showed me Serbia’s most precious bloom – Natalie’s Ramonda. This little flower, worn before and after a special holiday, symbolises suffering and remembrance, but also has the incredible ability to revive even after drying up. Seriously, nature is amazing!

With a renewed sense of calm, I headed back to the apartment, checked out (leaving my luggage safely stored), and made a final stop at The Cathedral Church of Saint Michael. Another architectural stunner, this church left me in awe with its intricate details and rich history.

With a couple of hours left before my pick-up, I revisited Belgrade Fortress. This time, I savoured the spectacular views of the Sava and Danube rivers, a fitting end to an incredible adventure. As I sat there, taking it all in, a wave of emotions washed over me. Belgrade had surprised me at every turn – from the warmth of its people to the delicious food, the rich history, and the vibrant atmosphere.

Leaving Belgrade felt like saying goodbye to a newfound friend. Sure, I might have had a phone incident on day one, but that just adds to the story, right? This solo trip was more than just sightseeing; it was an experience that left a lasting impression. Belgrade, you stole my heart and gave me memories that will last a lifetime.
