In today’s interconnected digital age, it’s easier than ever to create your own business selling digital products. With digital products, you only have to make them once and can sell them an infinite amount of times. Because they can be scaled so easily, there is no limit to how successful your business can become.

You don’t even have to be creative to start a business selling digital products, because many of the components can be outsourced to experts on freelance marketplaces, or even AI. If you’re passionate about your products, that’s even more valuable because it’ll show that you care about your products and the results they create for your customers.

Here’s a guide to get you started.

  1. Identify Your Passions, Interests, and Skills

What lights you up and gets you excited? What are you skilled in? You may be skilled at something but aren’t passionate about it. If you’re in business just for the income, you may as well be working a job. Business should combine passion and profitability, because if you aren’t passionate about what you create then you won’t care about the customer experience.

  1. Identify Your Niche

Before you get started creating products, you need to identify your target market. Who do you want to serve? What is the type of person who will benefit from receiving your digital products?

Is there a demand for your products? You can use tools like Google Trends, keyword research, and/or platforms like Etsy® and Amazon® to gauge demand and see what people are searching for.

  1. Choose Your Digital Product Type

There are tons of digital product ideas to choose from. Here are some ideas:

E-Books

Online Courses (Share your knowledge on a particular topic)

Printables (Planners, worksheets, art, etc)

Software/Apps

Stock Photos/Videos

Stock Audio Clips/Songs

  1. Create Your Product

Once you’ve decided on a product, you need to create it. There are plenty of resources that make product creation easy. For instance, you can use Canva® to create an e-book or other printables. You can use Teachable® or Udemy® for online courses.

When it comes to online courses, you don’t need to get too fancy. All you need is a microphone, a device to take video, and software like PowerPoint® or Keynote® to put the course together.

If you need images, scripts, or other content, you can use AI to generate them.

  1. Build Your Online Brand

If you’re using a large platform such as Etsy®, Udemy®, or CreativeMarket® to sell to your customers, then you already have marketing built-in. Many sellers don’t need their own websites.

However, if you choose to build your own brand you should implement the following:

Website/Blog. There are many low-cost platforms such as Wix® and WordPress® that can host your website for you. When you have your own website for your business, it appears much more professional.

Social Media. Social media is required for social proof. Prospective customers want to be sure you’re legitimate before they invest in your business.

Email List. This is an easy way to communicate with your customers. Remember, you don’t own your social media accounts but you do own your email list. Many providers offer list creation for free up to a certain amount of subscribers.

  1. Launch and Market Your Products

After your products are ready to be sold, you need to market them. This means you need to make them known to your audience. Build your social media presence by focusing on your business and the results your products create. You can even utilize social media ads to drive traffic to your products.

  1. Analyze and Optimize

After you create your products, you need to make sure they’re selling. If they aren’t, then you need to adjust and relaunch them. Get audience feedback, and tailor the products to fit their needs. You can always try different things to see which work, and which don’t.

Focus on keeping the right mindset, and try different platforms until you start seeing success. Consistency is key.
