You've seen them everywhere. Milling in the philosophy section at your local book store, sipping on a venti skim lattes or rocking out at Raptures show wearing their perfectly worn in corduroy blazer atop a vintage t shirt with a cheeky saying. The hipsters have taken the fashion world by storm with their "i don't care how I look" style that takes a little more effort than it appears to. A style largely made popular by a collage of music including indie rock, emo, and new age punk, more and more effortlessly chic college aged coed's have been adopting this look. The question is, can you achieve this popular metropolitan look? With a few tips you'll fit right in with largely growing underground group.

  • Don't Try to Hard

Let me rephrase. Don't look like you tried hard. In complete contrast with past fashion trends, the key to this look is to make it appear that you didn't try at all. What hipsters are trying to say is, "fashion and materialism isn't important to us." While this is probably a false statement because those who are trying to look a certain way generally do care about what they look like, the idea behind it isn't so far fetched. If you find that you put your shirt on inside out or didn't bother to iron your pants, don't bother fixing it if you want to look like a hipster. Strategic fashion mishaps from your head to your toes seem to complete the look, and that includes your hair. (Thats right, bed head is acceptable!)

  • Go Vintage:

While the hipster style is increasing in popularity the key is to find things that no one has. By going vintage you will have access to articles of clothing that aren't sold in the masses by more popular clothing stores. While it's definitely okay to purchase a few pieces from those stores, trolling the aisles of second hand stores is the way to go when you want something one of a kind.

  • Mix it Up:

The key to looking the part is playing the part and hipsters everywhere seem to agree on one thing when it comes to their clothing: Don't go for a particular look. Sounds a bit crazy when you think about it. You are in fact trying to look like a hipster, but in this backward statement there is wisdom. If you go to Urban Outfitters and find a cute outfit reminiscent of hipster style, the only thing you've achieved is paying a lot of money to "look" like someone else. No one should be able to look at you and say "I know where she shops!" Instead, pair that cute top you found with a great pair of pants you bought at the thrift shop. Found an awesome blazer laying unclaimed in the back of your favorite music venue? Take a stroll down to the shopping district and grab a fun vintage style t shirt to go underneath it. The idea is to use your individual style to come over with some unusual fashion pairings.

  • Accessorize:

Accessories are a great way to add your individual style to your already trendy "bohemian chic" wardrobe. Don't think that an accessory needs to match your outfit, instead let it compliment your outfit and match your identity. In the ultra chic world of hipsters, you will find that bigger is usually better, and strange and unusual is often well sought after. Look for pieces that catch your eye and don't' be afraid to try on ones that you normally wouldn't. Don't limit your accessories to just jewelry, add depth to your outfit with leggings, unique socks, scarves (during the winter of course), and headbands/head wraps. There really are no major rules when it comes to how to accessorize, only that you should.
