People have been using pick-up lines since Adam and Eve ate the fruit and Heaven on earth fell to pieces. Now instead of living in perfect harmony we live in a world where we must compete for Eve and vie for her affections. How do we do this? Well, through interaction, and many times that initial interaction will be through an opening statement or pick-up line.

Many philistines dismiss pick-up lines as a convention of the 1970s or a ploy that doesn't work. Others use tired and/or poorly-constructed pick-up lines that they found on some troglodyte's website, to no avail. The truth is that the most famous pick-up line "What's your sign?" actually in it's time, before everyone and their grandpa knew it, was a good conversation starter. The key to a good pick-up line is to start a conversation that is fun and exciting and gets the girl to see YOU as fun and exciting which will then lead to her interest in dating you.

In general there are three immutable rules that one must follow when using a pick-up line if one expects it to succeed:

The pick-up line should be in the form of a question. Most pick-up lines are just stale closed-ended statements. Take for instance the pick-up line: "Baby I'm no Fred Flinstone, but I can make your Bedrock." This type of statement pick-up line doesn't make it easy for a girl to respond. When a pick-up line is in the form of a question it fosters conversation. For example, if you use the pick-up line "Do I look fat in these jeans?" you make it very easy for the girl to engage in conversation.

The pick-up line should be humorous and tasteful. You want the girl to laugh or smile, not to slap you in the face. Take for instance the pick-up line: "Why don't you sit in my lap and we'll talk about whatever pops up first." This type of sex-based pick-up line might make your buddies chuckle but the girl will most likely be offended and take you for a pervert. On the other hand if you take a pick-up line such as "Have you seen a smile around here?" your humor will be welcomed. You will always win using pick-up lines that are humorous and tasteful.

The pick-up line should be original. No one likes to hear the same joke twice and the same goes for pick-up lines. If you've heard the line before then it's best to choose a different one. To be safe, try to mix in a current news topic such as: "Do you think Tammy Faye puts on those fake eyelashes in Heaven?" The humor here may be a bit dark for a bubbly blond but I think you get my drift.

Now is a pick-up line going to make you a Casanova? Not necessarily, but it's a start. Casanova used psychology and other principles to go down as one of the worlds most famous pick-up artists. But, the pick-up line sets the stage for all the rest of your interactions with the lady thereafter. And remember what they say, no one forgets a first impression.
