You are probably familiar with the concept of a dashboard. Traditionally it has referred to the display that you see when you are in your automobile; it contains instruments that let you know how fast you are going, if any parts of your vehicle need maintenance, the temperature outside, and so on. As time has gone by, dashboards have had a lot more added to them.

Well the Information Age has brought the concept of the dashboard to a whole new level, one at which the traditional dashboard simply cannot compete. Let’s take a look at what a computer dashboard is and why it might be a useful tool to implement.

What is a computer dashboard?

The computer dashboard follows the general idea of the vehicle dashboard, in that it displays information relevant to your usage at the moment. Where vehicle dashboards traditionally include the same type of information from one car to the next, however, the computer dashboard is always tailored to the needs of the individual user.

Computer dashboards are designed to call up information according to the work you are doing on your computer at a specific time. This information is displayed on a sidebar or other tool that you choose to use.

What makes the dashboard useful?

The vital feature of the computer dashboard is that it allows a computer user a much higher level of organization than has been possible before. You may be wondering what differentiates the dashboard from a basic Windows format, and the difference lies in the method of calling up the information.

Think about a specific work assignment you may need to get done. Once you get started, using Windows only you can call up other websites on your computer that contain relevant information, but you still have to know where to look for this information.

With a computer dashboard, the information is not only displayed for you, but the computer is the one who goes and finds the relevant files. If you have an email containing notice about an extension, or a file that relates to the research you need to do for the assignment, for example, your computer will add it to the dashboard feature so you can refer to it easily.

Like the dashboard in the automobile, the computer dashboard provides easy reference access to the user without individual effort in information gathering. This can be an incredibly useful tool for anyone who likes a little bit more organization in his or her day!

Many companies are finding that having all of their project information stored in one place, is a business collaboration solution that lets employees easily access and contribute information.
