As a general rule parents are supposed to know more than their children, and for the most part perhaps you do. However, when it comes to the world of Myspace there are a lot of things we can learn from our kids.

If you have children between the ages of 10 – 18 chances are they have a Myspace. If you don’t have children but you have friends or family that do the same rule applies. Myspace is a social networking GIANT and almost everyone knows somebody who has one.

Most people assume that Myspace is "just for kids" or at least for people under the age of 30… this is simply NOT TRUE. There are people of every age on Myspace and a lot of them are using their page not just to chat with friends or kill some free time but to build their businesses on the internet!

How can a free website like Myspace help build your business?

Look at it this way… if you own your own business chances are you have your own website. The problem is the internet is a HUGE place and even if you have the best website in the world you can have trouble getting people to find it, and what good is a website if no one ever sees it?

Since so many people are a part of Myspace the more people you get to know on Myspace the more people will get to know about your website thus driving more traffic to your website and ultimately making you more money!

So now that you know you need a Myspace how do you get started?

You can sign up at Myspace.com. Your account is free and extremely easy to set up. Once you’ve signed up and logged in you’ll see the same page that everyone else sees when they sign up at Myspace, a very plain looking blue and white default layout.

A lot of Myspace "experts" will tell you that you can keep the default layout and that will work just fine… that would be wrong. Ask any teenager and they’ll tell you that your layout is very very important. It helps people get a sense of who you are as a person and it makes you more likable which in the end will make people want to go to your website more.

Another thing that we can learn from teenagers is how to be friendly, not pushy. Just because you are setting up your Myspace with the ultimate goal of getting more people to go to your website doesn’t mean you should ONLY talk about business or constantly send out messages with your URL. This turns people off right away and won’t make you any friends in the world of Myspace… and probably not in the real world either.

You want to be professional but also open and "real". Nobody wants to talk to someone who doesn’t have a life outside their business. The more you make yourself out to be a real person the more people will trust you and want to be in business with you.

Another thing that will draw people to you is your profile picture. Teenagers on Myspace know the importance of a profile picture and they make sure they have a great one! A lot of adults who join Myspace don’t think that their profile picture is important and so they don’t post one…. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!

Try to make your picture as natural and friendly as you can. You don’t walk around all day in a suit and tie so your picture shouldn’t look like that… it should look like YOU!

There are so many tricks and tips out there for making your Myspace as effective as possible. However, these tips I’ve given you are a great start! I hope that you get out there and start making a great impression with your Myspace page as soon as possible.
