A futures trading system is software with a given set of pre-defined rules that govern all its activities. It studies the futures market, analyzes data, uses key figures to work out signals and once it gets the signals, it advises the traders to either enter or exit a futures trade. The software is also capable of placing orders. Essentially, a futures trading system is a portfolio organizer and trading assistant.

Futures trading software operates on a set of rules. These rules act as the primary algorithm for all the trading advice the system offers. The most common principles that make the basis of a futures trading system are: Moving Averages, Stochastic, Oscillators, Relative Strength, and Bollinger Bands.

The primary advantage of a futures trading system is that it makes trading much quicker. The futures market is highly responsive to several factors and tends to move rapidly. The trader may not be able to perform the entire math before deciding on a trade. Also, emotions drive human beings. Often traders make decisions based on greed, instinct, prejudices, or pure whims. Futures trading systems tend to do away with all this. There is no room for emotions, as the governing factors are completely mathematical.

On the downside, futures trading systems are momentum players. The algorithm detects certain trends and expects them to continue. Also, the trading habits of a handful of traders determine the preferred algorithm for a trading system and this may not be applicable over the years. These systems are also expensive and it is difficult to decide on which vendor you would like to buy them from.

With so much said, there is no denying that futures trading systems are gaining popularity amongst traders. These systems are an intelligent mix of human knowledge and mathematical precision and many traders use them regularly.
