During the early stages of the disease, the symptoms of lung cancer are entirely absent. The first symptoms of lung cancer to make their appearance are a persistent cough or a worsening smoker's cough and bloody sputum coughed up from the respiratory tract. Sometimes these symptoms may include headaches, bone pain, dizziness, and bouts of pneumonia or bronchitis. The early symptoms of lung cancer may include a cough that doesn't go away and becomes worse as time passes. It may include chest pain that occurs constantly or a fit of blood coughing. It may also include hoarseness or wheezing or shortness of breath. It may include fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, or swelling up of the neck. Another symptom of lung cancer is swelling of the face because of superior vena cava obstruction (SVCO). SVC is a vein that carries blood from the brain and the area of the head back to the heart. When the SVC becomes obstructed, blood builds up behind the site of the obstruction. This results in fluid oozing out of the vein into the tissues of the face. The face then swells up.Most of these symptoms are also found in other diseases too. Therefore, it is always advisable to meet your doctor immediately so that in case they are due to lung cancer, the diagnosis and treatment can be initiated at the earliest possible.A pancoast tumor is lung cancer that develops at the top of the lung. The common symptoms seen in the case of a pancoast tumor include severe pain in the shoulder and a set of symptoms known as Homer's syndrome. The set of symptoms include weakness or hanging of an eyelid and a small pupil in the eye and sweating loss on that side of the face. These symptoms are caused because the tumor presses on or damages a nerve that runs from the neck to that side of the face.Certain hormones are sometimes produced by lung cancer cells. These hormones move into the blood vessels. These hormones are responsible for some peculiar symptoms. These are known as paraneoplastic symptoms. They include a sensation of pins and needles in toes or fingers, weakness in muscles, dizziness, sleepiness, blood clots, and swelling of breasts in men.Although these symptoms are mostly attributable to other illnesses, it is important to remember that they can well be caused as a result of lung cancer. This last fact makes it important to not ignore any of these symptoms and to inform your doctor as soon as you find these symptoms.Besides these symptoms of lung cancer, there may be various other symptoms found in various other parts of the body. These are found after lung cancer cells spread to other parts of the body and cause secondary cancer at those sites.
