People through the ages have always been fascinated by knives, and they have always been used for all kinds of outdoor activities like hunting and wood cutting. When we talk about camping knives we mean knives that are specifically made to meet the needs of a camper. A knife can have more than one purpose, it can be used as cooking utensil or to cut the plants used for cooking but also as a weapon to protect yourself from the wild life. It doesn't matter if your a woman or a man, everyone can use one.

A camping knife should be part of the standard kit you take with you. The moment you start to plan your trip and check your list make sure it is on the permanent one. If you do not own one at this moment then you should go to your preferred camping store and buy one and don't go cheap on this item because you want it to last you a life time. There are different designs and manufacturers to choose from and these knives can for many purposes.

The Survival type

When your camping trip is going to be a rough one then the better knife choice would probably be the survival knife. These types could best be described as a multi-purpose knives. They have a strong and long blade and often have, on one side, teeth like a saw with which you can cut through small lumber. in the handle of survival knives you can often find other small objects like a compass and matches to compliment the survival nature of this knife.

Fixed or Folding blades

You should also think about the type of blade you want. There are the ones with a fixed blade like the survival knife but you could also choose one with a folding blade. If you choose the folding kind you can go for the multi-purpose type that holds a complete tool set including screwdrivers and tooth picks, they are also known as swiss army knives. When the camping trip is also a hunting trip then you are probably better of with a fixed blade these are lengthier then the once that can fold.

Kitchen knives

Although a kitchen knife is not the same as the ones we have been talking about above, they do deserve some mentioning because when you need knives in your camping kitchen you can't just take the ones you use at home without checking if they are stainless steel. Other then that you probably want a different set of cutlery to take with you on your camping trip and one that you can leave at home. This way if something gets misplaced or lost while on your trip will not be missed once you get home.

So you see that a knife is something that should be on your permanent camping checklist, you never know when you need it and you don't want to be without it at a crucial moment.

Great idea to have separate knives for cooking! It is also a great idea to have more than 1 knife that you carry, usually a fixed blade with a sheath and a pocket knife 2 or 3 bladed about 3 to 4 inches in length closed. Just in case you loose one you will have a back up to get you by.
