Argumentative research papers is about advocating and persuasion. They are about taking a stand on an issue, a belief, an idea or a cause and defending it against opposing points of view. Writing a paper that is argumentative in nature is not easy. A writer who decides to write this kind of research paper should not defend his opinion just for the sake of defending it, he should have the intention of winning it. His primary goal is to convince people to accept his point of view.

A writer should not choose a topic that is impossible to win, like abortion, gun control, plastic surgery or freedom of speech. Not only are these topics hard to defend, they are also too common that professors have become too familiar with them. These topics simply have lost their appeal. If a writer wants to create an impact, he should write something that spurs controversy or even debate. He can get ideas from reading news magazines, watching news on TV, or interviewing political leaders or prominent personalities.

After selecting a topic, a writer should start looking at books or references that talks about his topic, including other works that support and reject his argument. Normally, the topics for argumentative research papers are presented in the form of a statement, but it can also be introduced as a question if a writer wants it to sound more provocative. A writer should present his supporting evidences in a way that will strengthen his position and deflect any argument that goes against his belief. Excellent argumentative research papersassert an opinion that is backed up with data based on facts, statistics or through articles and books.

A writer should make an argumentative research paper that can strongly persuade a reader and at the same time, can face any possible opposition head-on. The benefit a writer gets for doing an argumentative research paper is not only the fulfillment of defending what he believes is right, it is also the the opportunity to increase his knowledge on that belief. By doing research, a writer will soon find himself an expert on the issue he will defend.
