There are many jobs available today where you can work from home, but not all
of these jobs offer a steady income. If you are looking for a career where you
can have flexibility as well as earn a steady income, then medical transcription
may be a good option. The medical
transcriptionist salary also offers the option to enter a higher pay bracket
as your skills improve, so the longer you work, the more money you can
potentially earn
The first thing you should do before you start your career as a medical
transcriptionist is take a medical
transcriptionist course. There are many options for courses out there such
as self paced online courses and more structured courses at colleges and
universities. There is even the option to start without any previous experience
in an entry level job, but this will generally start you in a much lower pay
bracket than the other options. College course work can run up to many semesters
depending on how you structure your course load. If you choose an online course
however, you will typically spend a steady 3 to 6 months completing it. Many of
the online courses are also self paced, so that if you need to take more time
completing the work or if you are in more of a hurry to finish, there is no
specific time set that you need to have the material completed by. This setup
gives you quite a bit more flexibility.
When you have completed your coursework and begin job hunting, you can expect
to earn somewhere around 30 or 40K a year when you start out and even upwards of
70K+ as you have more experience under your belt. Some companies will pay you by
the hour and others will pay you by the line. If you are hired by a "per hour"
company they will generally want you to start off in an office environment where
you have a supervisor. If you are paid per line, they won’t care as much how
long it takes you to complete the task, as long as it is done and accurate. If
you are paid by the line you can expect to make somewhere between $0.06-$0.13
depending on your skill sets.
There are many employers all over the country looking for reliable MT’s. If
you have a desire to start down another career path or you want to set your own
schedule and have additional freedoms, but still want to have a steady flow of
cash coming in, medical transcription is definitely worth looking into. For more
