Biotechnology offers a wide spectrum of career choices, since the field is large and the advancement and improvisation in specific fields are an ongoing process. Those who are considering taking up biotechnology as a career should be aware of this fact, as this would help them to decide in which field they would like to specialize. There are 6 major areas to consider, and each has its own field of expertise within it.
Biological scientists are those who study living organisms by using modern scientific methods. This area covers plants, animals, microbes and microscopic organisms. Careers in this area include agricultural and food scientists, veterinarians, general practitioners, medical scientists, biomedical engineers, pharmacists, conservation scientists and forensic scientists.
Biomedical engineers are the ones responsible for creating artificial body parts, better known as prostheses. Careers for biomedical engineers include computer hardware engineers, physical therapists, surgeons and mechanical engineers.
Clinical laboratory technologists examine body fluids and tissues, using complex tests, to detect signs of diseases. Their work profile includes biological scientists, pathologists, chemist and materials scientists, and science technicians. Forensic scientists, or crime laboratory analysts, provide crucial scientific information in criminal cases or court hearings. Careers include pathologists, detectives, anthropologists, archaeologists and biological scientists.
Medical scientists conduct research on viruses and bacteria that cause diseases, to develop vaccines and medications to combat the diseases. Career branches include internists, statisticians, chemists and material scientists and veterinarians. Pathologists are actually doctors who study the cause and development of diseases, which are of utmost importance for legal purposes to determine the cause of death. Career lines include forensic scientists, surgeons, general practitioners and internists.
Pharmacists are the final field of biotechnology, and are known for distributing medications and giving crucial advice on the correct medication and dosage to patients. Career options are as anesthesiologists, pharmacy technicians, advanced practice nurses and psychiatrists.
