According to Chinese medical philosophy health is dependent on maintaining a balance between Yin and Yang. Together they create a unified whole. While all of the systems and organs of the body are related and intertwined, the upper body is associated with Yang qualities and the bottom half is associated with the Yin aspects.
Yang is often thought of as being related to heat and dryness while Yin is cool and moist Yang may be viewed as more male and Yin is associated with feminine qualities. An imbalance leads to illness and disquiet. Signs such as the color of the tongue and its coating are indications of whether it is a Yang condition or Yin condition. Liu wei di Huang wan contains Rhizoma Alismatis which is one herb that has been used extensively to help dispel excessive heat in the body. It is also used to rid excess dampness. These conditions may also lead to an excess of phlegm in the lungs which can cause symptoms of skin conditions as well. This herb may also reduce symptoms such as night sweats and bloating which makes this formula beneficial for menopausal women. Poriae is also an ingredient in this formulation that clears dampness.
It is used for urinary imbalances and also addresses restlessness, anxiety and insomnia. Poriae is another ingredient in liu wei di huang that may be helpful for menopausal and postmenopausal women. It has been used extensively to calm ragged nerves and is also useful to support the urinary tract which often poses difficulty for menopausal women. Fructus Comi another important ingredient in this wholesome formula that supports recovering liver and kidneys as well. Liu Wei di Huang Wan also contains Cortex Moutan Radicis which is cool in nature so it is also beneficial in combating excessive heat. Cortex Moutan Radicis promotes circulation. It may also help dispel infection, inflammation and detoxify the system.
