Dog food poisoning can come in many different forms and types and can be a frightening time for dogs and pets. The effects of food poisoning on dogs can be fatal in some cases and even ordinary foods can be poisonous to dogs so pet owners must beware when feeding their dogs leftovers and tidbits.
Regardless of the fact that even well known brands of pet food can cause food poisoning in dogs due to accidental contamination, there are also many foods that contain toxins that are harmful to dogs.
Quality Of Good and Bad Pet Foods
Poor quality pet foods are common in grocery stores and pet supply stores. The low price tag may be tempting and seem like a bargain for what is often advertised as a "premium" product, but the items really contained in your pet's food may be surprising.
Dogs need meat and protein, being carnivores, and they also need carbohydrates, vitamins, fat, minerals, and water. Essentially, they need all six of the basic types of nutrients. Manufacturers of pet food have the choice of the types and amounts of proteins, minerals, and vitamins that they put into their products. Chicken, lamb, and beef, which contain higher amounts of protein, are needed by active dogs. Plants or grains such as corn, soy, wheat, and rice have enough protein for less active dogs.
Most dog food is made with ingredients that are edible by humans, such as rice, chicken, liver, vegetables, etc, which is not bad pet food.
Having said this there are ways to clear your dog of this condition to help them to a strong recovery, provided you know that it is food poisoning you are dealing with and it has been confirmed by a professional vet, the diagnosis will normally be to fee your dog only water for twenty four hours so your dogs body can be freed of the offending poisoning from the unwanted food, your dog will do this by either vomit or diarrhea.
In order to prevent the harmful effects of food poisoning in dogs, there are a number of steps and precautions that pet owners can take.
*Limiting the amount of raw meat and especially fish that your dog regularly eats can prevent infections caused by bacteria and parasites.
*Moldy and gone off food should never be given to a dog to save it from being wasted.
*Chocolate and sweets are not good for dogs because of certain ingredients but also because the fat content is too excessive for a dog’s system.
*Excessive amounts of onion, garlic and other ingredients used in most kitchens can become quite toxic to a dog.
If you do not take this action your dog's body will continue to get rid of any food you feed your dog because the immune system thinks the food entering the body is causing the poisoning thus getting rid of it. This cycle will continue and your dog will be ill and unwell until everything has been emptied out of your dogs system and it can return back to normal again.
After this you should feed your dog on bland foods and gradually build up to tastier and stronger smelling foods until all is normal again.
