ATV camping is a lot like backpack and vehicle camping except with ATV camping you have more options than backpack camping and less options than vehicle camping. So when it comes to the right camping accessories you have to think a lot like a backpacker and try to keep things fairly lightweight. Most utility ATVs now days can easily carry 100 pounds of camping gear and supplies, so camping furniture and gourmet cooking gear is not a problem just try to keep them lightweight. There are even tent trailers that can be pulled behind an ATV. For regular tent camping determine the size of your group and if there will be anyone that will be sharing a tent. This will dictate the size of tents to bring. There are many lightweight tents available up to 4 and even 6 person capacities. Remember when using group tents try to distribute the weight evenly between everyone so the person carrying the tent is carrying the same weight as everyone else. Keeping the total weight of camping gear and supplies for each ATV to 100 pounds is a good rule of thumb, although some ATVs can obviously carry more weight than others, 100 pounds is per person is plenty of camping gear and supplies for a couple of days camping. The sleeping gear for ATV camping is typically a good mat, pillow, and sleeping bag rated for the climate expected. For cookware and stoves you can be a little more selective than with backpack camping. A full size two-burner camping stove is not uncommon for ATV camping nor is a good backpacking stove. A comfortable lightweight portable camping chair and portable table make for a nice setting around the campfire. Lightweight portable coolers stocked with your favorite camping food and drinks are also common. Then you have the basic gear such as lanterns, first aid kit, insect repellant, change of clothing, flashlights, shovels, etc. Through proper selection you can pretty much have all the comforts and amenities of vehicle tent camping with ATV camping.
Now that the camping gear and supplies have been covered there still needs to be the gear for the ATV. Because ATV camping puts you in the middle of no-where it is critical that you are prepared. Prepared if there is a breakdown, flat tire, stuck ATV, rain, or a lost member of the group. Therefore, a good set of ATV luggage, a good tool pack (now we are not talking about a Snap-On Toolbox), tire plug kit, air compressor, rain gear, tow strap, winch, 2-way radios, GPS, map, and first aid kit are some of the ATV gear one might carry. Again though proper selection one can outfit their ATV without adding much weight.
