Unusual Business Idea #54 - Law and Odor

Smelly skunk chemicals are the latest weapon against unwelcome cats and dogs, not to mention undesirable people.

Scientists in New Zealand are using the animal’s stinking spray as the main ingredient in a repellent designed to ward off cats and dogs. And now the "skunk squad" of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department is ordering bulk shipments of the Skunkshot repellent to keep prostitutes, drug dealers and homeless people out of abandoned buildings.

The repellent makes the interior of the premises very unpleasant for several weeks. Physicist Andrew Rakich patented a repellent spray in 1994 and now sells 20,000 tubes of SkunkShot a year in New Zealand.

At around $10, one tube covers 200 square meters and the repellent lasts for three weeks. The product was created in 1994 initially as something people could spray at a threatening dog, but was adapted for use to protect garden plants and lawns from dogs and cats.

Unusual Business Idea #58 – Smell of The Wild

Coyote urine is flying off the shelves, snapped up by homeowners desperate to keep deer out of their properties. Ron Ruiz Ken Johnson of Sebec, Maine, is having a difficult time keeping up with demand for his bottles of pungent 100 percent coyote urine.

In the past ten years, sales of urine from all kind of predators – like coyotes, bobcats, and foxes – have risen hugely. According to retailers, coyote urine deters deer and raccoon, bobcat urine is best for moles and mice, and fox urine deters groundhogs, rabbits, and chipmunks. Johnson’s company, Leg Up Enterprises, now gathers the precious fluid at breeding farms in New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where coyotes are being raised for zoos, game farms, fur, or reintroduction into the wild.
