Although the Pug is one of the most popular dog breeds, anyone who is considering owning one should be aware of the breed specific pug dog health care. The Pug became an officially recognized AKC Toy group breed in 1885, but has been known to man for thousands of years. Pug's are not hard to recognize, as they have a wrinkly and flat face, a curly tail, and a thick little body. Twenty to thirty pounds, and ten to fourteen inches tall is the standard for the Pug breed. Many of the things that make these dogs so cute are the very things that cause them so many health care problems, so extra care has to be taken.

Inspect the dog's folds carefully for any sign of infection between them, as this is a common problem for Pugs and one that must be fixed by a vet. The folds are highly prone to bacteria infection if any dirt is allowed to build up between them, so regular bathing helps prevent this.

Another factor which could cause pug dog health problems is its eyes. It is because of the unique shape and design of the fact that the eyes are not protected as well as other dogs, and therefore are susceptible to injury and other problems. Any infection should immediately be detected through regular eye exams, and any inflammation is a reason to take your dog to the vet immediately.

A common ailment among many of the Pug breed is eating more food than they need. Always watch your dog's food intake and keep him at a healthy weight, as a negative weight can affect a dog as badly as it can a human. Shade is essential to any Pug left outside during the summer, as they do not handle heat or humidity well so for this same reason, never leave your Pug (or any dog) in a parked car during the summer. Periods of intense heat in general will cause difficulty breathing, so make sure you do not leave the breed exposed to high heat.

Of course, like any dog, taking proper care of your pet and taking him to the vet for regular visits is the best way to insure good pug dog health. Take responsible care of your pet, and you will have a pet who will provide many years worth of happiness.

Vitamin and mineral supplements Vitamin and mineral supplements are the most important components in any dog’s feeding. Pet owners should know that vitamins A, D, E, and K are the fat-soluble vitamins and others are water-soluble vitamins. Deficiency of vitamin A leads to night blindness and skin lesions and deficiency of vitamin D leads to the softening and weakening of the bones. Cod liver oil from selected fishes has more vitamin A in them and are universally good feed for dogs. Careless supplementations of minerals may lead to diseases and hence, veterinarians always need to be consulted on the supplementation of minerals or vitamins.
