With the economy the way that it is right now, many men have found themselves without a job. Some have lost their jobs after putting in years with the same companies. This is raising the number of men that suffering from depression. Depression has been around for a long time, long enough that many people understand what going on anti depression medication means and without insurance these medications are simply not in budget.
This has forced many men to seek out help for their depression in the form of herbal remedies. Herbal remedies have been used to treat depression for a very long time. They have also been proven to be very effective too. Such herbal remedies as St. John's Wort, Valerian root, Damiana, and Ginseng are of the most popular herbal ways to battle depression. St. John's Wort has proven to be just as effective as prescription antidepressants without the side effects.
Valerian root has been shown to alleviate the insomnia that is commonly associated with depression. Prescription antidepressants can cause sexual dysfunctions so many then turn to Damiana which will reduce these side effects. Ginseng helps the body to fight off stress which is very helpful when a person suffers from depression. Other people use different herbs for depression and depression related symptoms.
Men that have a low dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids may suffer from depression because without the proper amount of them the human brain can not ever function on full throttle. The body can't make omega-3s on its own, so it must be obtained through diet. In countries where they eat more fish they have a much lower depression rate than that of North America.
Cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies are the richest food source of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil capsules are considered the cleanest source of omega-3 fatty acids. Men that are depressed usually lack Vitamin B (Folic Acid) which is found in green leafy vegetables, fruit, beans, and fortified grains. There are many factors that can lead to a Vitamin B deficiency such as a poor diet, certain conditions, and some medications.
Stress depletes magnesium and most men are already lacking magnesium in their diets. Good sources of magnesium are legumes, nuts, whole grains and green vegetables. Like vitamin B6, magnesium is needed for serotonin production. Diet plays a big role in depression and many men don't realize that.
