Yves Saint Laurent, YSL a popular fashion house of luxury clothing was started by Yves Saint Laurent and his co-worker Pierre Berge. After the death of Yves Saint Laurent in 2008, Stefano Pilati joined in as a chief designer.
Yves Saint Laurent brand was established in the year 1962. In between 1960-70, the brand offered the range of collection that included safari jackets for men and women, tight pants, long boots which had a typical Beatnik look (anti-materialistic lifestyle). It focused on creating the popular classic tuxedo suit especially for women called the Le Smoking, in the year 1966. He had a huge collection of memorable designs Pop Art, Ballet Russes, Picasso, and Chinese, with this he brought back the fashion of 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s of designing the silhouettes. In 1966, he popularized ready-to-wear collection in order to liberalize fashion and he started Rive Gauche and Rive Gauche boutique.
In 1993, Yves St. Laurent sold its fashion house to Sanofi, a pharmaceutical company for around $600,000,000. After designing three collections, by Alber Elbaz in 1998-99, Gucci took over the YSL brand, for which he suggested Tom Ford to design the ready-to-wear range while YSL was engaged to design the haute couture range.
He was the first person in the fashion industry to introduce blacks for modeling his collection in fashion shows. Yves St. Laurent fashion clothing is highly recognized for its exceptional and modern elegance seen in his creation. Yves St. Laurent clothing specifically for women included a male range like the blazer, the leather jacket, the tuxedo, the pant suit etc….
Finally in the year 2002, during which YSL was suffering with poor health, depression, got in habit of consuming alcohol, drugs, and the intolerable criticisms for the designs by YSL due to which Saint-Laurent decided wind up the couture house of YSL. Presently, the YSL brand survives under the Gucci Group, which is YSL’s parent company. Where as Tom Ford left YSL in the year 2004 and Stefano Pilati still directs and designs the pret-a-porter fashion label, which is a French style rather than the sexy image the Tom Ford had created.
