Given the wide range of golf irons that are available, it's no wonder that beginners especially have a difficult time knowing what they should buy. Golf irons are the clubs you'll usually use after you have used a fairway wood and before you use your putter. It is important that you have the proper golf iron for that middle portion of your game. Having the proper golf iron can help you to get on the green in fewer strokes.
When it comes to the material, there are basically two types of irons. You can buy forged or you can buy cast. Forging is an age-old method of shaping iron into a preferable form. Casting allows you to form the metal into more intricate shapes and designs. Cast clubs tend to have a larger sweet spot and make them much better for the beginner or high handicap golfer. They are more forgiving than the forged style of golf iron and can help you in overcoming the number of bad shots you normally have as a beginner. On the other hand, low handicap golfers tend to find they can control a shot much better with a forged iron. Due to the fact they have a more consistent swing, they are more likely to hit the ball on the smaller sweet spot and with more control and better shot shaping.
The club shaft is another thing you have to take into consideration. Basically there are two choices here that you can make. You can go with steel or you can go with a graphite shaft. Steel shafts or for those who have higher swing speeds. High swing speed helps you to put more power into each shot giving you the necessary distance for the club. If you have a slow swing however you need something to help you and here's where graphite shafts come into play. Graphite is lighter than steel allowing you to swing the golf club much faster which will usually give you more distance. Another aspect of using graphite shafts is where a golfer has arthritis or tendinitis. The graphite shafts absorb much of the impact of the club head with the ball preventing the shock from traveling up and hurting your hands.
Shaft length is another thing to determine when buying an iron. You need to choose the shaft length that fits with your body type. Generally if you measure:
-29 to 32 inches then your iron should be based on a five iron of 37 inches
-33 to 34 inches then your iron should be based on a five iron to 37 1/2 inches
-35 to 36 inches then your iron should be based on a 538 inches
-37 to 38 inches then your iron should be based on a five iron of 38 1/2 inches
-39 to 40 inches then your iron should be based on the five iron of 39 inches
-41 or more inches means your iron should be based on a five iron and 39 1/2 inches
As you can easily see there are many options available to you when buying a golf iron. You need to be very honest with yourself as to your capabilities, your swing speed, the consistency of your swing as well as your ability to hit a golf ball consistently in the same spot on the face of the club. Being honest with yourself will help you to choose the club that can actually make the game of golf much easier for you. The easier you make the game the more enjoyable it will be for you.
