Very unusual island country, Iceland attracts tourists with its unique nature. Inclement and magnificent, Iceland is a country of geysers, glaciers and volcanoes.
Reykjavik is a political, cultural, industrial and commercial country centre. It’s a very modern city with high level of life. However, the prices there are high too. The city is situated along the bay, there are no large factories and the air is clear. Outdoor ponds with the thermal water are situated right in the centre of the city. Reykjavik restaurants are famous for its fish dishes. The local fish is something delicious!
Reykjavik is a small cozy city and all its attractions lay within small area. Usually tourist are shown Hallgrimskirlja Cathedral, Asmundarsafn and Kjarvalsstadir museums and Perlan building with the panoramic view over the city.
The Golden circle, one of the most popular tourist routes includes visit to Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Area, Gullfoss, Skalholt and Kerid.
Thingvellir National Park is the cradle of Iceland nation, a place strongly connected with the history of the country and one of the most beautiful places on the island. It was here, where in 930 AD gathered the most powerful chieftains of the local tribes and created Alting. It was the first Parliament in the Western Europe.
The next stop is Geysir Area. Geothermal spring called Geysir is located here. Later all the hot geothermal springs were begun to be called so. The earth in this valley is boiling up, the steam is swirling above the colorful puddles of the medicinal mud. Sometimes the height of geyser jets can reach about 20-30 meters.
Just several kilometers from the Geysir Area lays Gullfoss – the Golden Waterfall. The waters of the Hvita River fall down from 32-meters height to the narrow canyon. Those who are lucky to visit the place on the sunny day can enjoy the outstanding view of the rainbow. In winter the part of the waterfall is frozen, with creates a fantastical impression.
Skalholt village is a place with an important role in Iceland history. Skalholt is the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops.
Volcano crater Kerid was once very dangerous, but now there is a unique underworld lake with the green water.
These are the most popular sights, but Iceland has something else to offer.
The so-called Silver Circle includes the most beautiful place of the West Coast – Hvalfjordur fiord is the biggest one in Iceland. Deildatunguhver is the most powerful geothermal spring in Europe. Reykholt is considered to be the cultural capital of the country.
The Southern Iceland is a land of quiet fishermen’s villages, flourishing fields, beautiful waterfalls and sand beaches.
Blue Lagoon – a unique geothermal resort is a perfect place for relaxing and rest.
The best time for visiting Iceland is summer. The significant part of the hotels is open only from May or June till September.
Iceland seems a country from the fairy-tale or myth. No high trees or high buildings, majestic landscapes – all this creates an impression that the times of the ancient gods and medieval knights are not gone.
