No matter what type of pond you may have on your property, whether it is natural or man made, you can use pond landscaping to create an even more splendid environment. Pond landscaping can enhance your backyard and add charm and beauty to what otherwise might be only a sad, lonely spot of water in your yard. Natural materials can be used to create an oasis that is attractive and let's face it, water features are always cool! By creating an even more relaxing area you will find you spend even more time outside enjoying your yard.
In order for pond landscaping to be effective the ground around your pond needs to be stable as pond landscaping will include plants and other features. You may also add stones and other materials to the area and these additions need to remain in place after the first rainfall. If your soil is not ideal you may need to add clay. This will provide the right kind of base for your pond landscaping. Retaining walls can be used either directly into the pond or placed around the edges. You can then fill the remaining space with plant compost and good topsoil ensuring that the soil will not be washed into the pond.
Getting All You Want In Your Design
When searching for ideas for your pond you should document what natural water areas appeal to you. Go visit those areas and take pictures, such as forests and parks. Who knows you may be able to incorporate some of those ideas into your pond landscaping design. You can use rocks effectively on the shore of your pond depending on the slope of the surrounding area. You can also use plants that grow in the water or in the ground, tall grasses are very popular. Additionally plants can be used to camouflage to edge of your pond where the water meets the soil. Driftwood and small piles of stones can be used to create a lasting weathered look around your pond. Take as many pictures and ideas as you can and determine what will work best for your pond landscape.
Before you start any yard work you should have your pond landscape design down on paper. Map it out for the desired pond size and shape and where each plant or other material will go. If you need to change the shape of your existing pond you can use clay, earth and stones to add curves or fill in other areas. It is important to keep the look as natural as possible otherwise your pond may look out of place and not as part of a cohesive unit with the rest of your lawn. When choosing plants make sure you understand specifics such as how tall the plant will grow and if it needs any special maintenance.
You can also use your pictures to show salespeople the type of plants you are interested in. Ask as many questions as necessary as you don't want to have plant problems with your pond over the years. With care and research in your planning you will soon create a fantastic water oasis in your landscape.
