Border collies are extremely active and hard working dogs. They are frequently used on farms to help with the livestock, thus considered as the world's best sheep herding dogs. Nobody can doubt their ability to herd all kinds of animals - sheep, cattle, free range poultry, pigs and ostriches to name a few. Some have herding instinct so strong that they tend to herd even human especially children.

A trained border collie can do the work that it would take around three persons can do. But for all their hard work and loyalty, what do they ask for in return? Nothing but their owner's pure love and care, right? Thus, owners should master the craft in taking good care of their furry pet.

Vaccination.

While some argue that vaccination may not be necessary, it is always good to know that your dog is protected from various diseases. Vaccinate your dog the moment you get it and then get regular booster vaccinations. Regular vaccination could be every six months or every year, ask your vet about it.

Food and Nutrition.

Food plays an important role in the active lifestyle of border collies. In order for them to perform better at work, they should be given foods with high-quality products. Review the list of ingredients and make sure that the first ingredient is meat, fish, egg or some type of meat meal or fish meal. Some dog owner prefer homemade dog food. Just be sure to include 40% meat, 30% vegetables and 30% starch. To be sure, ask your vet about it.

Grooming.

Grooming a pet is not for aesthetic purposes only. Doing so is one way to keep pets happy and healthy. Border collies have moderate amount of coat that requires brushing two or three times a week to prevent mats and tangles. Bathing should be done only when necessary to prevent the coat from becoming dry and brittle. Using shampoo specifically created for dogs is also advisable. When grooming, remember to check your dog's ears, eyes, skin, nails and teeth. You should also look for parasites, cuts, sores or infections and treat them before they get worst.

Training.

Border collies are very intelligent dogs and can cause lots of trouble if they are bored and not properly trained. Socialization should start at around three weeks of age. This includes social investigation and playful fighting. They can also be trained to perform in agility competitions, herding trials and several dog sports.

Exercise.

Border collies should be exercised twice a day for around 30 to 45 minutes each session. However, physical exercise alone is not sufficient to keep up with this breed's oozing energy. They must be provided with work but not necessarily herding or other farm works. Playing frisbee and chasing or retrieving a ball are considered work by border collies.
