Shopping for a Medicare Supplement policy should be easy. One would certainly think shopping for a Medicare Supplement should be easy enough. Back in the early 1990’s, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners standardized Medicare Supplement Insurance plan offerings. Medicare Supplement plans were labeled with a letter which would signify the benefits of the Medicare Supplement plan. All Medicare Supplement Insurance companies could only offer these alphabetically labeled Medicare Supplement plans. The Medicare Supplement or Medigap Insurance plans were labeled with the letter A through J. Later plans high deductible Plan F and high deductible Plan J, along with Plans K and L were added. Sounds simple enough, doesn't’t it? Why then were all Medicare Supplement Insurance companies charging substantially different premiums? Good question. When shopping for Medicare Supplement Insurance researching all available Medicare Supplement plans is the only reasonable solution. For example, a 65 year old female in rural Illinois could obtain coverage with Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company for a plan F Medicare Supplement for only $93.36 monthly or this same individual could pay $178.00 for a Plan F Medicare Supplement policy with Combined Insurance Company. That’s a difference of $1,015.68 annually. Wow! Now it is easy to see that shopping for a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan is easy when thorough research is conducted prior to the purchase. One needs to be cautious and make the right decision. Imagine, when shopping for Medicare Supplement Insurance if one were to act impulsively. What if after enrolling in an over-priced Medicare Supplement policy the health of the consumer were to change for the worse? This happens quite often and the individual is stuck in the over-priced Medicare Supplement plan and cannot change due to health impairments. In conclusion, when shopping for Medicare Supplement Insurance or a Medigap Insurance policy, research, compare, and ask questions. Many of these concerns can be dealt with by dealing with a broker whom represents multiple Medicare Supplement Insurance companies.
