For many couples wanting to have children the word infertility is a very scary subject. Many times they go from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what is wrong. Many times the couple is having trouble due to the woman having blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. Blocked fallopian tubes account for about 25 percent of infertility in women.
There are many reasons this can happen here are some but not all:
· Infection
· Adhesions
· Polyps
If the doctor feels that blocked or damaged fallopian tubes are the reason then they will perform a test called a Hysterosalpingogram. This test is an x-ray of the fallopian tubes and the uterus. A technician in most cases in the hospital will perform it. This test is looking for the shape of the uterus any blockage or damage of the fallopian tubes and to what extent the problem is.
There are certain things your doctor will need to know before the test is performed. It is very important to be truthful and honest even though it is a hard subject to discuss. The patient will need to let the doctor know the following things:
· Is there any possibility that you may be pregnant?
· Do you have a sexually transmitted disease?
· Are you allergic to anything?
· Have you experienced any bleeding problems or are you taking any medication for your blood such as a blood-thinning agent?
The actual procedure should be performed three to five days after your menstrual period. For those with irregular menstrual cycles this may be hard to calculate but it is something that the doctor can deal with.
The day of the test the best thing to do is try to stay relaxed. There will be a small amount of dye inserted to be able to look at all the areas that are in question. This will help the individual or technician performing the test get accurate results.
