Breastfeeding is the way babies were meant to be fed. While the numbers of women who begin breastfeeding are on the rise, many do not continue very long. The benefits of breastfeeding continue for as long as a baby is nursed, however. It can be the only food a baby needs for the first six months of his life. Once they begin solid foods, breastfeeding still fills a need for both nutrition and comfort in the baby's life.
- Colostrum Is Liquid Gold
Before your milk comes in, baby will drink a thick yellow fluid known as colostrum. This is a liquid that is rich in immunities, calories and everything else your baby needs to get started digesting food. Fats, vitamins and minerals are available that help baby get off to a good start. It helps baby's stomach and intestinal tract get populated with the beneficial bacteria that are needed for a healthy digestive system.
- Breastmilk is Made Specifically for Each Child
Your milk will be made to suit your baby's needs. As your baby grows, your milk will change to meet her needs. It is never too watery or too rich. Your milk will have the precise amount of protein, vitamins, minerals and fat that your baby needs. It can even change from feeding to feeding. Breastmilk does not cause constipation in babies, and their diapers won't be as offensive to the nose. Breastfed babies may end up burping less, and the breast is the perfect shape to help baby's mouth become the perfect shape for their teeth.
- Always Ready for Baby
Baby should begin nursing as soon after birth as possible. Nursing your baby when he shows signs of hunger will help you produce more milk and reassure your baby that when he needs something, he is taken care of. When baby goes through a growth spurt, he will nurse more frequently to build up the milk supply. Babies digest breastmilk in about 1-1/2 hours, so a breastfed baby will often want to nurse every 2 to 3 hours. This is normal.
- Breastmilk is Safe for Baby
Breastmilk is safe and fresh whenever you need it. It is always the perfect temperature and is ready at a moment's notice. Waking up with baby in the middle of the night is easier since baby can be fed quickly while she is still sleepy. If you need to travel, there is no special equipment needed. Your breastmilk is always ready to go. There is no need to pack bottles, ice packs or other equipment that is needed when babies are formula-fed.
- Health Benefits for Baby
Breastfed babies statistically have fewer infections and illnesses than formula-fed babies. Your baby will get direct access to hormones and other factors that help him grow properly and develop a good immune system. There are some studies that suggest that breastfed babies may have a lower risk of becoming obese in later life. Obesity can contribute to other health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.
As you can see, breastfeeding offers your baby a healthy start in life. It also has benefits for you, like added protection from several types of cancer and easier weight loss after childbirth.
