Body fat can be separated into two categories. These are essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat is needed in order for our bodies to function normerly. Women's essential fat is higher because of some gender specific areas that contain fat such as the breasts, pelvis, hips and thighs.

Storage fat is that fat that is found beneath your skin, surrounding vital organs for protection and in your muscles. The percentage of storage fat is similar between men and women. Some storage fat is needed in the body because it adds protection to certain body parts. Most of us have excess storage fat that is expendable. Storage fat is what you want to lose when you lose weight.

When your percentage of body fat exceeds this level you are putting yourself at risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and other illnesses. Research has shown that if you develop excess bodyfat around your belly then you are at a higher risk for developing these diseases than if you carry extra fat in your thighs and buttocks.

Although most of us are concerned about too much bodyfat, if you bodyfat is too low this can also cause problems. This is mainly due to the fact that in order for the body to perform normal, healthy functioning some fat is required. If your essential bodyfat becomes to low you are at risk of developing illness and impaired bodily function. Body fat that is too low in women can affect their menstrual cycles and their fertility.
