Carpentry is an art of making something out of nothing. A wooden log after going through a carpenter’s hand, earns its identity. From wooden floors, to staircase, a wall unit or a cabinet, a carpenter can create a whole house of wood.

The skill of carpentry comes by knowledge and experience. Though there are many short term and detailed courses available on this subject, but it is the experience that polishes the craftsmanship. Carpentry has many forms. It includes construction, installation, erection and repairing. Any construction whether it is a bridge, a building or an automobile cannot get completed without being touched by a carpenter. Though the nature of carpentry varies dependently on the kind of job, there are some basics of this profession.

The chore of the carpenter begins with the blueprint of the project. Blueprints are the detailed instructions from the supervisor. The next step involves accurate measuring and marking. Then the required supply of materials for the task is arranged.

The chisels, saws, drills, screws and nails are the common weapon of all the carpenters. The carpentry as a profession is so vast that it has many areas of specialization in its own. A carpenter can never stay jobless. The work is perpetual. No house or a commercial place or a building or any office can work without these skilled men.

Going with the cosmic need of today’s world, many carpenters gain a hand of experience on almost all the carpentry skills while some focused ones become the master of a few jobs.

As every profession has its ailments, the carpentry work also has its drawbacks. The working environment of the carpenter is not so healthy. The job itself is very tiring as it involves prolonged hours of standing. The use of sharp tools and the unsafe locations make this job hazardous.

Most of the carpenters are self employed and they bring home handsome earnings. The carpenters, because of their exposure to all kinds of constructions, get more opportunities as compared to any other workers.

Carpentry is an art of its kind and a carpenter is the maker of variety. This craftsmanship needs immense concentration, dedication and a passion to create.
