The most common over the counter and prescription drugs used to treat both tension headaches as well as migraine headaches are aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol is the best example), ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil are commonly known ibuprofen brands,) or naproxen. These alternatives include the use of acupuncture or acupressure therapy, biofeedback therapy, chiropractic treatments, and the water-based hydrotherapy treatment. Many herbs have been tried for migraine help as well. These herbs include chamomile, feverfew, valerian (which is also a great help for insomnia), white willow, and skullcap.

Migraine Treatment

People who suffer from the migraine headaches feel like this problem is impairing their strength and vitality. Sometimes it is too frustrating when all the migraine treatments you are using or have used fail to relieve you of the problem.

The starting symptoms of migraine headaches are generally the spots, sensitivity to light, smells, or sounds, feeling dizzy or nauseated etc. At that time most of you want to stick up in your bed in a dark room with no light and sound to disturb you. You feel dizziness to the extent that you are unable to perform at work, school and even at home. Migraines are not harmful but the pain can be severe. More than 17% of all women and 7% of men suffer from migraine. Also children are affected. There is no cure for migraine because the causes are still unknown yet. However, the symptoms can be treated. Some people even report that they never had a migraine again since they changed their lifestyle.

What Causes Migraine

As migraines occur as a two-phase process with levels of certain hormones high in one phase and low in the next phase, a lot of treatments can either help or make the headache worse, depending on timing. For the same reason, treatments that relieve one person can make it worse for another person.

Sometimes the bones in the neck are wrongly placed, and the little muscles near the bones are strained. This is called "subluxation" which results in the nerves that lead out from the spine to be irritated and causes migraines. The bones are very close to being in the right place, so a medical doctor might say they are in the right place.

Natural Migraine Treatment

Butterbur is considered a natural migraine treatment because studies have shown that by taking butterbur extracts you can reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. As a natural migraine treatment, try taking 75 mg of butterbur extract twice a day. This was the amount taken in the previously mentioned studies.
