Most people might not be aware of it but there are actually two kinds of forklifts being used in the manufacturing industry. These are the industrial and rough terrain model. Basically, the industrial forklifts are the ones commonly seen in factories, warehouses, and freight terminals. This equipment performs most of the lifting and stacking involved in operations. Meanwhile, rough terrain forklifts were specifically designed for rough surfaces.

Industrial Forklifts

Before the invention of the industrial forklifts, workers used to perform heavy lifting and stacking manually. Fortunately for today’s workers, this is no longer the case. All they need to do is learn how the equipment is operated. Forklifts, in essence, had not only made companies a lot more efficient and cost-effective, it also reduced the amount of injuries workers suffered in the workplace.

It should be noted that forklifts are not recreational machines. It is only good for industrial purposes and must be operated according to standard safety procedures. In addition, forklifts may pose a safety hazard due to its moving parts, heated areas, and exposed wheels. Overhead guards should be fitted to the machine; however, these protections should not hinder the operator from having sufficient visibility.

Recreational Forklifts

Meanwhile, the rough terrain forklift is the cousin of the industrial forklift. Essentially, it was created for transporting objects in rough surfaces. It is ideally used for construction sites, lumberyards, and in general, in non-paved areas where lifting capability is required. Because of the heavy requirements imposed on it, this type of equipment has big pneumatic tires that have deep threads to allow the vehicle to navigate through the roughest areas without slipping or sliding.

In general, it is more powerful than the industrial forklift. It has an internal combustion engine that can use diesel, gasoline, or propane fuel depending on manufacturer specifications. Some forklift manufacturers have introduced forklifts that make use of ethanol but it is not widely used at this point. A significant number of these equipments have the capability to lift more than a thousand pounds.

And because of the heavier demand in today’s environment, a number of forklifts have been designed to carry up to two thousand pounds. In addition, the continual improvement in this area has helped increase the load capability of this machine. Some forklifts can now lift up to four thousand pounds.

In essence, it is undeniable that forklifts have revolutionized the manufacturing, freight, and retail industry in more ways than one. And in the process, it has changed the lifestyle of billions of individuals around the world. It is remarkable that one relatively simple invention can alter the course of business operations, logistics, and economies worldwide.

Without the forklift, people will still be stacking stocks into retail shelves manually. Skyscrapers would be incredibly expensive to build because of its manpower requirements and economies will remain stagnant because of the minimal productivity within the nation. In addition, most technological innovations today directly or indirectly attribute a significant part of its development to this industrial equipment.
