The Caldera of Santorini was formed due to large volcano eruption nearly about 3500 years ago. Now this caldera has been famed as the greatest wonder of the world. This strong volcanic eruption was occurred in Aegean Sea and this volcanic explosion created the caldera, which is well known as the greatest wonder on the planet earth.
3500 years back there was a large volcanic eruption which was occurred in Aegean sea. The volcanic explosion was so severe that changed the structure of entire Mediterranean coast. The scientists and archaeologists link the Santorini Caldera to the myth of Atlantis.
The most amazing and dramatic thing about Santorini is that the villages are constructed on the Caldera rim. Today this Caldera rim is regarded as the most important geographical configuration on the earth. The Santorini caldera is said to be as a big basin that expands for miles and almost touching the sky established more than a thousand feet from the sea level.
Caldera in Santorini now days expanded approximately 32 square miles where as the water's depth varies from 300 to 600 meters and height is 150 to 350 meters. The caldera has been changed many times during this century due to the frequent volcanic activities.
To the northern side of the Caldera is the picturesque village of Oia. This is a welcoming village most preferred by the tourists and extremely popular for it’s breath taking romantic sunset and busy with plenty of bars, restaurants and hotels with panoramic view of Santorini Caldera. Many artists every year come to Oia and get established here forever and for this reason you can find many art galleries in the village of Oia.
The capital city of Fira is located at eastern part of the Caldera at a height of 1200 fit from the sea level. This is the busiest town buzzing with all kinds of Hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops. Tourists can find all sorts of accommodation facilities. As this capital city is established at a height of 1200 fit the international tourists can take the charm of wonderful Caldera.
Just bellow the cliff, main port of Santorini is established. The tourists who arrive at the port of Fira have the option of embarking on a donkey ride that carries them to peak from where one can see the amazing surrounding natural panorama. Also you can have a nice experience with donkey riding.
