The story is about Katherine Brandt, who wants to unveil the secrets of Beethoven's life and why he had composed 33 variations of the Waltz. The Waltz was written by Anton Diabelli, who wanted Beethoven to write a composition for it. Initially Beethoven refused, but later wrote 33 variations for it. Katherine, the musicologist, is suffering from a life-threatening disease and has a difficult relationship with her daughter Clara. The play depicts how the ailing Katherine decides to go to Germany to find the answers to the mysteries of the Beethoven compositions. During this journey she finds various clues about the life of Beethoven and also learns to come to terms with her own life.
